In 2006, the Democrats had some success with a slate of veterans who used their military credentials to argue against the war...
"Iraq's going to be a tough issue for everybody, but we're going to be uniquely positioned to deal with it," says former Marine Cpl. Keiran Lalor, a Republican running in the Hudson Valley of New York. "The Democrats went around and found the exception to the rule: They found the Iraq vets against the war."
The Republican vets have linked themselves to Sen. McCain's presidential bid and hope to ride to victory on his coattails.
While most of the group, calling themselves Iraq Veterans for Congress, are running against incumbent Democrats, four are in primary contests for seats currently held by Republicans. In two of these races, the veterans are challenging incumbents the national party would prefer to run again. An additional vet has already won the primary for an open Republican seat.
Several members of Iraq Veterans for Congress, founded by Mr. Lalor, are running in districts considered safe for Democratic incumbents, making their candidacies largely symbolic. Mr. Lalor faces Democratic freshman Rep. John Hall, a former rock singer with the 1970s group Orleans.
Mr. Lalor says he is running to represent Gen. Petraeus, who was born in Cornwall, N.Y., a town in the 19th district, and whose alma mater, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, is also in the district.
Even symbolic candidacies could influence the debate in swing states. Former Army Lt. Col. William Russell is running against Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, one of the top Democrats in the House. Mr. Russell says Rep. Murtha has "emboldened the enemy" with remarks about the Marines accused of killing civilians in Haditha.

Let’s support the heros
A President Obama may not want to bring the troops home. ;-)
The Cavalry has arrived!!!!!! Thanks God!!
I want a list. I love the troops, and I hope all of these vets are CONSERVATIVES through and through, not John McCain “Conservative Ultra-Lite”.
Stivers is running in my district. Met him once. He’s got my vote.
Thanks for posting their website. I will contribute to each, but I do want to check out their position on Aliens.
I sure hope they are all build the wall and no employment types.
Interesting this article doesn’t mention Duncan D. Hunter who is an Iraq vet and running for congress. But then, the Hunters don’t fit in the globalist, cheap labor views of the WSJ.
Lalor - NY19 - He's up against John Hall who upset Susan Kelly in 06. Bush narrowly won the district. That one is winnable.
Bellavia - NY26 - Tom Reynolds is retiring and won narrowly. We should hold this district, but it is not an easy race.
Breazeale - NC7 - Mike McIntyre's district. That will be tough due to cross-over votes that McIntyre gets, but at least that district has someone running. I believe Bush won that district, so that theoreticaly can be winnable.
Coffman - CO6 - Tom Tancredo's district. The primary should be the race there.
Harmon - IN7 - Indianapolis is tough, but not impossible.
Hunter - CA52 - That one should be ours. Duncan Hunter gets his dad's seat.
Manion - PA8 - A first term democrat, Patrick Murphy, is being challenged. Two Iraq vets in this battle. Should be interesting.
Micco - NJ9 - Steve Rothman's district. He's had easy fights since replacing the Torch in his old district, but give him credit for running. At worst, he may keep Rothman home instead of helping others like the democrat in Ferguson's old district. At best, he pulls a Chris Carney on him in reverse.
Rayburn - CO5 - Doug Lamborn's district. This is a primary challenge. There was a lot of infighting in 06 in the primary then. Solid GOP district - at least for now. We'll see after the primary if the democrats go for the long shot.
Roughneen - NJ7 - This needs to be a top priority race. Mike Ferguson is retiring and won with 49% in 06. It is close to a 50/50 district.
Russell - PA12 (Typo on site said 22) - John Murtha's seat. Murtha is tough to beat, but I think he'll be stronger than Irey.
Salisbury - ID1 - Bill Sali is getting primaried, and that might not be all bad considering he almost lost.
Sand - NDatlarge - Why don't we fight for this seat?
Strivers - OH15 - Deb Price's seat. Top priority open seat
Summers - ME1 - Maine 1 is very tough, but we won this in 94 and held it in most of the 80's. We need to compete in districts like this one.
West - FL22 - Clay Shaw had this district until he lost in 06. Another first term democrat, Ron Klein has this spot. It's treading democrat, but this one is still winnable with the right circumstances. Darkhorse race we need to compete in.
Zeldin - NY1 - Long Island is tough, but we won here in 2000 and 94. Another darkhorse race winnable under the right circumstances.
The China kneepadders won’t like young Hunter anymore than they like his old man.
I work in politics and know of 2 guys off the top of my head who have credible GOP campaigns for US Congress. They are both military veterans, very strong traditional conservatives, and both are very much opposed to the war in Iraq. Mainly, they believe in George Washington’s advice of free and prosperous trade with all nations, and entangling alliances with none. They swore to uphold the Constitution, including the part about actual Congressional declarations of war.
But I won’t hold my breath waiting for the WSJ (or anyone for that matter) to write an article about that.
