A Living Lie (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | April 15, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 04/14/2008 7:49:05 PM PDT by jazusamo

An e-mail from a reader said that, while Hillary Clinton tells lies, Barack Obama is himself a lie. That is becoming painfully apparent with each new revelation of how drastically his carefully crafted image this election year contrasts with what he has actually been saying and doing for many years.

Senator Obama's election year image is that of a man who can bring the country together, overcoming differences of party or race, as well as solving our international problems by talking with Iran and other countries with which we are at odds, and performing other miscellaneous miracles as needed.

There is, of course, not a speck of evidence that Obama has ever transcended party differences in the United States Senate. Voting records analyzed by the National Journal show him to be the farthest left of anyone in the Senate. Nor has he sponsored any significant bipartisan legislation — nor any other significant legislation, for that matter.

Senator Obama is all talk — glib talk, exciting talk, confident talk, but still just talk.

Some of his recent talk in San Francisco has stirred up controversy because it revealed yet another blatant contradiction between Barack Obama's public image and his reality.

Speaking privately to supporters in heavily left-liberal San Francisco, Obama let down his hair and described working class people in Pennsylvania as so "bitter" that they "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them."

Like so much that Obama has said and done over the years, this is standard stuff on the far left, where guns and religion are regarded as signs of psychological dysfunction — and where opinions different from those of the left are ascribed to emotions ("bitter" in this case), rather than to arguments that need to be answered...

I took on the same subject as Dr. Sowell. But of course, his is better written, and better grounded in history. I would have discarded mine, if his had been published first.

Congressman Billybob

Latest article, "Bitter"? "Clinging to Guns"? No, "Dumb as a Box of Rocks"

Help a Freeper into Congress.

the temperature is rising. I wonder if Obama is going to show us what charismatic flameout is.

Not for the primaries, because his attitude is typical of the far left racist whitey hating freeloaders who make up his core constituency (like his wife). Just out of curiosity I wonder if ether of them ever held a job in the private sector. I'm sure I could look it up, but the very thought of delving into the sycophantic public biographies of either one of them makes me nauseous.

Excellent post. It is actually Obama and his inner circle that are obsessed with race and embittered, especially his whining wife and racist deluded preacher

That sentence also jumped out at me.

In expounding on this point, I would say that the left is all consumed with emotions. They base all their policy positions on emotions. All policy positions are either “nice” or “mean” - they make me “feel good” or “feel bad”.

Ascribing emotion to the opposition’s genuine “difference of opinion” is simple projection on the part of the left.

Don’t forget folks, Obama is the ACCIDENTAL SENATOR!

He was a throwaway candidate agains a well funded rich republican. It was a nasty divorce that did the republican in and gave obama a free pass (against alan keys it was as if there was no race at all)

Every now and then you read about a patriotic black man and wonder if his politics would do for a Republican candidate. For example, Lt. Col. Greg Gadson, the Iraq War amputee who was visited in Walter Reed by his old West Point football teammate, now a coach for the NY Giants. The coach asked Gadson to give the Giants a pep talk when they were down and out - and he inspired them so much that they not only made the playoffs but won the Superbowl.

John McCain will be our presidential nominee - that is baked in the cake.

The Democrats will either nominate Obama for president, or will have Obama or some other black as their running mate. Whoever it is will be a leftist as much as Obama and Clinton are - and equally divisive while claiming to be "against politics as usual." That is baked in the cake, too.

IOW, the Democrats are setting up a scenario in which the defeat of their ticket would be politically incorrect, and "justification" for riots. The conclusion is that McCain would be well served - and would serve the country well - by nominating an inspirational figure for VP. A black American patriot. Then when the Democratic ticket self destructs - as seems probable at this point - the identity of the VP- elect will be news. And if rioting were to eventuate, McCain could simply announce that he is having a tonsillectomy or something, and that the VP was the acting POTUS. And he could simply say, "knock it off," and the riot would instantly be delegitimated. An entirely different scenario than the Rodney King riots.

Your piece is a good one, CBB. Don’t slight yourself comparing your writing to that of Dr. Sowell’s, no one writes quite like him but you’re right up there with him, IMO. :-)

Very interesting. BUT, imagine that the VP is Shelby Steele ... since the drive-by liberal media has already trashed him, they could too easily brush him aside as irrelevant to 'the black experience'. Remember, to the sycophantic leftist liberal media queers (meant in an 'odd lot' usage), there is no death or damage or chaos they will not embrace if it works to marginalize or defeat conservatism and reverence for God, Christ, and or Israel.

The abortion holocaust has been embraced by the liberal fools because it is standing in opposition to 'fear of God's wrath for murdering the innocent'; we have posters at FR who chide Republicans for insisting on keeping the pro-life plank in the platform because it excludes pro-choice moderates ... and the real reason these people push this is related to their relationship or lack thereof with God and Christ. Many of these people are democrat voting Catholics or Protestants pretending to respect God while spitting in His face by endorsing the slaughter of alive innocent unborn.

Abortion is but one example of how liberalism has mutated/diseased the Republic. The Rodham rodent revealed another aspect when she tried to get Gen. Petraeus to say what defeat in Iraq would look like, during an open, televised hearing ... in effect, the stupid leftist bitch was trying to get intel for the enemies of this nation in order to empower the democrap party by aiding the focused attack from ghouls like al qaeda! And not one media outlet, including the 'operation chaos' obsessed Rush Limbaugh, has brought this aspect of her treachery out to the clueless American people!

FRiend, I wish solutions were as simplistic as you offered. But sadly, the complicit with the enemy media makes solutions much more difficult and convoluted. Liberalism is a disease now threatening to kill the Republic with the diseased 'tissues and organs' now rotting in our society.

I would say that the left is all consumed with emotions. They base all their policy positions on emotions.

When two sets of folks have a major disconnect between them, each side will tend to perceive the other that way.

You'd probably just get the sanitized version anyway.

Oh, I make no doubt that Big Journalism would attack, just as you say. But there is the secret ballot, and in the privacy of the ballot box only the left wing - and not even all blacks - will vote for the black militant whom Obama has shown himself to be. Obama may poll OK during September and perhaps even October - but you just have to be pretty strange to vote for someone who is contemptuous of you and everyone who looks like you.

When reality hits on Nov 4, black Obama voters may threaten or actually start a "quiet' riot. But if when that happens the incoming administration speaks with the voice of a black - call him "inauthentic" if you want, but remember that Obama's father is not descended from anyone who was ever a slave in America, and given his Muslim name is more likely than not descended from a slave seller in Africa - the patience of the country with the poseurs will IMHO break.

If Big Journalism were as powerful as it conceives of itself as, no Republican would ever be elected. Obviously that is not actually the case.

I believe he’s about to go down.

I don't know. I think the media has way too much invested in him, and it's too far down the path for them to pull out. If Hillary was a little likable they might switch sides at this point, but she's not. Also, too many of the party power structure have put themselves in a position from which they can't back down.

I expect simply more effort to cover for him as it progresses. After the convention he will get a complete pass on everything because his only opponent will be a "Republican". And McCain has already made it clear he won't play hardball. Typical RINO, lead with the chin.
