California superdelegates' wavering bodes ill for Hillary Clinton
LA Times ^ | May 5th, 2008 | Scott Martelle

Hillary Rodham Clinton, stung last week by the defection of a prominent superdelegate, could lose the backing of more of these Democratic Party leaders and elected officials if she fails to make significant gains in the remaining month of presidential nominating contests, several California superdelegates said this weekend.

Two of the five superdelegates aligned with Clinton who spoke at the annual California Democratic Convention here said they would reconsider their support if rival Barack Obama maintained his lead in elected delegates and the popular vote after the last contests on June 3.

While hardly reflecting a groundswell, the superdelegates' comments underscored the concerns among some of these officials about the drawn-out Democratic race. It follows the embarrassing defection Clinton's campaign suffered Thursday when former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew switched his support from her to Obama, and warned that the negative tone of the campaign was becoming a "catastrophe" that would help Republicans.

Christopher Stampolis of Santa Clara, a superdelegate who endorsed Clinton after the Iowa caucuses, said that he remained in the New York senator's camp but that his commitment expired with the end of the primaries.

"When it's done, all of us, whether we're committed or not, we're going to take a look" at the final eight contests, said Stampolis, who until recently worked in external relations for a Bay Area environmental firm. "Our job is to represent the constituents who trusted us to win the White House."

Garry Shay, a Los Angeles attorney, said that if Clinton remained about 150 pledged delegates behind Obama, the current estimated margin, he would have to "reassess the entirety of the situation."

"It doesn't mandate me switching," he said, "but it does mandate me reconsidering."

"Our job is to represent the constituents who trusted us to win the White House."

These seems to be presented as a view that hurts Hillary. I'm not so sure.

The delegate math is pretty insurmountable and that favors Obama. But the popular vote is much more up in the air. Saying that "the constituents" or "the people" must be respected can be an argument in favor of ousting Obama.

If God Forbid, Operation Chaos does succeed - Hillary Klinton would be President for next 8 years.

Re: Operation Chaos — I think we’ve gained everything we can at this point. I would very much like Obama to be the nominee, so I now think doing or saying anything to help Hillary is a mistake.

Correct! It is time to put her down. And as important, it is time to put her down in such a way that Obama picks some other woman for his VP selectee.

This would enrage her. She would no longer be the woman with best shot at being first.

She would make occasional speeches for him, but you can bet a lot of money that she would spend all her time working to get the party to fund Congressional races, knowing that every penny that went for them came out of money that would have gone to Obama.

That would get a McCain win. Obama is farther from the center than Hillary and McCain wins by owning the center.

That gets us victory in Iraq, more conservative Justices than otherwise and profound moderation in the tax increases the Democrats plan.

I never liked Operation Chaos much because Hillary is too much of a threat.

The sooner that lightweight Obama gets the nomination the better.

Dream on.

Such a position and such a dem ticket will get McCain a 34 state loss.

Pray that no such thing happens...

I cannot imagine Obama being stupid enough to make Hill his running mate, for one Big Reason: Fort Marcy Park. If I were him, in those circumstances, I would fear for my life for the next four years.

Yes, like the unfortunate filly she bet on in the Derby - I agree, put her and the rest of the country out of our misery.

Worried about IN, because when it's close, that means she can steal a state.

Best case scenario, she loses both states tomorrow, the super-delegates start jumping on Obama’s side and the bitch will be forced to drop out.

Much of it revolves around seating FL & MI.
I think that is the biggest argument she has left.
