Supervisor says county spends more than $1 billion a year on benefits to illegals. According to new data from the Department of Public Services, nearly a quarter of Los Angeles County's welfare and food stamp benefits goes directly to the children of illegal aliens, at a cost of $36 million a month. "The total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year - NOT including the millions of dollars for education," said Antonovich. "With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $432 million in welfare allocations, illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers." In March, illegals collected over $10 million in welfare assistance and $16 million in food stamp allocations.

“By 2050 Americans of European descent will be a minority in the nation their ancestors created and built.”

I’m surprised the NY Times would actually acknowlege the historical and obvious truth that America was built by white Europeans. IT does not fit with their cultural relativism agenda.

I wish I could say I was shocked but I’m beyond that with the illegal alien scam.

You’re right, it doesn’t. That quote was actually from a book on the Times’ best-seller list, not from the Times.

Actually Californians have voted to stop benefits to illegals and federal judges have thrown the laws out as “unconstitutional”.

Notice how many conveniently seem to forget this?

Never forget what the fedgov and the local government co-conspirators did.

Why can't the citizens of Lost Angeles sue the city in civil court to get this spending on illegals stopped?

Why can't Americans sue the Feds in Federal court to force them to perform their sworn duties and secure our borders ?

They tried with prop 187 in 1994. It passed easily but guess what, a judge shut it down.

"Prop 187 passed with 59% of California's vote but after years of legal wrangling, it was mostly nullified when then-Democratic Gov. Gray Davis dropped the state's appeal of a federal judge's ruling that most of the proposition was unconstitutional.'

Gray was such a POS.

Or the number of hospitals that have had to close in not only metropolitan L.A. but around the entire country because those hospitals could no longer afford to remain in business and continue to give illegal aliens free medical care in their emergency rooms!

Sooner or later we are going to have to “clean up our act” and inform these people that the “free lunch is over”!

I know LA county covers a very large area, but how can NORMAL law-abiding, hard-working, honest Americans continue to live there?

It looks like many of the "normal" people are moving out.

Bureau of the Census figures for LA County [2006]:

Total population--9,948,081

White--4,660,343 [46.8%]

Black or African American--883,699 [8.9%]

American Indian and Alaska Native--49,164 [0.5%]

Asian--1,288,643 [13%]

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander--27,701 [0.3%]

Some other race--2,749,249 [27.6%]

Two or more races--289,282 [2.9%}

Hispanic or Latino (of any race)--4,706,994 [47.3%]

In 2000 the population was 9,519,338 with whites being 48.7% of the population and blacks 9.8%. Hispanics of all races were 44.6%. In just six years, the demographics are changing fairly rapidly.

In 1990 there were 5,035,103 whites and 3,351,242 Hispanics of all races. The Hispanic population has grown by almost 1.4 million in 16 years.

Further thoughts, please?

The larger context of my comment is that I think that the real driving force behind illegal immigration lies north of the border: by offering jobs and welfare, Americans are paying those folks to cross the border.

Moreover, I think there are a couple of good reasons why Americans pay folks to cross the border. First, what with taxes, benefits, and expected wages, Americans cost too much to employ. Second, Americans know that they have a choice between back-breaking and/or unpleasant physical labor on the one hand, and a welfare safety net on the other. And thus, from the perspective of American employers, illegal immigrants currently fill a large niche of the American labor pool better than Americans do.

Because the source of the problem lies with Americans, the solution lies there as well.

For example, it is impossible for illegal immigrants to grant themselves welfare payments. Only elected officials can do that. It is an American political problem, in other words ... and that must be dealt with politically.

For the economic part, the only ways to fill the labor niche with Americans rather than illegals, is to make Americans more attractive (i.e., less costly and more willing to accept those jobs), or to make illegals less attractive (i.e., increased likelihood of legal trouble).

Try reading about proposition 187, The Minutemen, US Border Patrol. People are doing something about illegal aliens. It’s just not as easy as you think it is, especially when the government imports illegal alien voters to vote in corrupt politicians.

If folks really want to clean up that problem, the solution lies in electing a county government that doesn't give away money to illegals.

In many cases it is too late. They control the political power and the ballot box. LA County is 47.3% Hispanic and there is also a large immigrant Asian population [13%]. 35.4% of the population is foreign born. The inmates are running the asylum.

I think that since the vast majoity of American citizens rose up and hammered their legislators into killing the infamous ‘06 Comprehensive “amnesty” Immigration bill in the Senate

Actually, the 2006 senate amensty bill [S 2611] passed and was killed by the Rep controlled House led by Jim Sensenbrenner. The public outcry killed McCain-Kennedy in 2007. Bush supported both bills.

And I do “blame” the illegals.

As do I. They choose to come here, knowing that they are breaking our laws. They hire coyotes and sneak past the Border Patrol. They get deported then come back again and again. They know perfectly well they are breaking our laws and do not care. It's like Terry Anderson says...the guy who laces up his boots and chooses to sneak across our border is my enemy.

The system is so corrupt anymore that it wouldn’t work. Hell, we win votes at the ballot box and some Carter or Clinton-appointed judge just throws it out. Once a system loses its integrity, the people have no recourse but to take matters into their own hands. We are at that point in America, and especially in places like southern California. And the stupid white liberals in this area have no idea how bad they are going to be treated once this low-brow immigrant mass gets a little more of an upper hand.

Claire Wolfe's words become truer every day:

"America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system and too soon to shoot the bastards."

LOL. What sophistry!! The reason why businesses hire illegals is because they are cheaper. They are cheaper because the employers are not abiding by US labor laws. It is an uneven playing field for American workers and the taxpayers subsidize the businesses by providing free health care, schools, etc. In the meantime, the black unemployment rate for April was 8.6% and 6.9% for Hispanics. This "niche" is being filled by exploiting a cheap, inexhaustible supply of what amounts to slave labor. They are depressing wages.

For example, it is impossible for illegal immigrants to grant themselves welfare payments. Only elected officials can do that. It is an American political problem, in other words ... and that must be dealt with politically.

Many of these welfare benefits are derived from their American born children. And the illegals use our ERs as free health clinics. I agree it must be dealth with politically, but we currently have a choice between McCain, Obama, and Hillary, all of whom support amnesty. Once you legalize their status the problem gets far worse in terms of the burden on our social systems. You not only increase the access to the 12 to 20 million already here, but they 66 million to 100 million whom they will sponsor to enter this country thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification.

For the economic part, the only ways to fill the labor niche with Americans rather than illegals, is to make Americans more attractive (i.e., less costly and more willing to accept those jobs), or to make illegals less attractive (i.e., increased likelihood of legal trouble).

This is a phony "niche." We need to penalize employers who hire illegals, i.e., enforce our existing laws. The idea that Americans don't want to do these jobs regardless of the salary is nonsense. The illegals have depressed wages making these jobs less attractive to American citizens.

I am SO open to VIABLE suggestions.......”

Quality of life and cost of living, especially housing, is incredibly superior in family-oriented, happily unhip suburban St. Louis...

Even with a precipitous drop in your property value in SoCal, you could probably turn around and secure palatial digs in the midwest.
