SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah police say a homeless man was electrocuted after apparently trying to steal copper from wires on a utility pole.

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say the man, whose identity was withheld until notification of relatives, fell from the pole near the Amtrak station Sunday night after he tried to cut live wires at the top.

More than 100 cases of copper theft were reported to Savannah police last year, and it continues to be a problem.

Hannibal Lecter: No! He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer now.

Clarice Starling: No. We just...

Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don't you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? And don't your eyes seek out the things you want?

What is even more funny is many of these poles do not have copper, just high tensle copper coated steel wire.

Well if you’re lookin’ for trouble
I’m the man to see
If you’re lookin’ for satisfaction
I’m satisfaction guaranteed
I’m as cool as a body on ice
Hotter than a rollin’ dice
Send you to heaven
Take you to hell
I ain’t foolin’
Can’t you tell

I’m a live wire, I’m a live wire, I’m a live wire
Gonna set this town on fire

And if you need some lovin’
And if you need some man
You’ve got the phone and the number
And I got no future plans
Oh come on honey you got nothin’ to lose
You got the thirst ‘n I got the booze
Give you an inch
Take you a mile
I wanna make you fry

I’m a live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
Holy smoke and sweet desire

Like a hot rod baby?
Oh stick this in your fuse box

Aah cooler than a body on ice
Hotter than a rollin’ dice
Wilder than a drunken fight
You’re gonna burn tonight

I’m a live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
And I’m gonna set this town on fire

Live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
Well I’m your live wire, (live wire)
I’m a live wire, (live wire)
You’re gonna burn
Ah look at me, guilty
Soak my circuit
Burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn

I don’t see how these copper thieves cash in. Copper is about $3 or $4 a pound now. I heard of a theft where 2000 feet (about 14,000 pounds) of copper wire was cut — and it put a bunch of customers out of service.

The recycling plant requires a photo ID. And they work with the police force to keep tabs on recent thefts. Showing up with 2000 feet of copper cable would look pretty suspicious, wouldn’t it? I would think that even cutting it into smaller sections and going to the recycling plant repeatedly would get to look fairly suspicious.

Doesn’t seem like a good avenue to financial gain to me. Not to mention the very real danger of getting zapped while trying.

He could have gotten together with the drunk from Davenport and checked the tracks for copper from flattened pennies.
