McCain urges joint town halls with Obama

BATON ROUGE, La. — John McCain is challenging Barack Obama to join him in 10 town hall meetings with voters between now and the Democratic National Convention in August.

McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting, sent his Democratic rival a letter Wednesday outlining the offer. He suggested the first town hall be held June 12 in New York.

He said President Kennedy had made such an agreement with former Senator Barry Goldwater for the 1964 election before Kennedy's assassination.

"I don't think we need any big media-run production, no process question from reporters, no spin rooms," McCain said. "Just two Americans running for office in the greatest nation on earth, responding to the questions of the people whose trust we must earn."

God, I could only listen to about 45 seconds of McCain talking. He's going to get crushed in the debates. This sucks so bad I can barely stand it. He sounds old, confused and the tone of his voice reminds me of the old guy on the Simpsons.

Obama is an islamic/marxist tool and McCain is just a frickin' tool.

How did we get to this?

I feel the same way. Except McCain is starting to remind me of Walter Brennan

Obama won’t agree to this...he’s a coward.

The reason McCain would want to travel and have joint appearances with Obama is pretty obvious to me. There would be an audience. He would not have to rely on republicans attending.

I disagree. McCain is a lot better in the town hall format. Obama is a disaster when he is off teleprompter and has to think on his feet.

You're kidding...right? GWB makes McCain look like a Toastermaster General.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion ... and I would agree with you if we're talking about interviews, press conferences, etc. McCain is pretty good at that stuff.

But as far as prepared speeches, McCain's effort last night was maybe the worst-delivered major political speech I've ever heard.

Bush has actually been quite eloquent in prepared speeches on occasion ... his convention acceptance speeches, address to Congress after 9/11, etc.

Hopefully McCain will get better ... or get a speech writer that can write to his style better.

McCain goes for the throat...not bad, but the setup questions Democrats will send to these things will be hard to prevent.

And the LameStream Media will only focus on McCain’s negatives in these meetings.

McCain is very good in an extemporaneous format, where Obama stinks and makes most of his mistakes in that format. Obama’s thing is the set-piece speech. This would also give McCain free pub he desperately need. Shrewd move.

The audience will be packed with Democrat activists and staffers as always.

Republicans need not apply for the option of asking a question of the Marxist and the Liberal.

Does McCain still have Dean staffers working his campaign?

He won’t “take advantage” of anything that would make Obama look bad.

The secret for political candidates is that whether you are in a debate or a “townhall” meeting, you don’t make up an answer on the spot.

You steer the question to something that YOU want to talk about. That is the only thinking that goes on the candidate’s feet at these things.

The fewer ums and uhs it takes you to get there, the better you do.

*odumbo would never do this*

Oh?

“The Obama campaign issued a statement welcoming the idea.

“As Barack Obama has said before, the idea of joint town halls is appealing and one that would allow a great conversation to take place about the need to change the direction of this country,” his campaign stated. “We would recommend a format that is less structured and lengthier than the McCain campaign suggests, one that more closely resembles the historic debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas.” “

We live now in a HD world. McCain would come across as a old man on the plasma TV.

But humor, personality and poise actually beat looks. If you see a beautiful film star on a late night talk show and she literally cannot string together a sentence, you lose some respect for her. If you see a short, troll-like male actor on such a show who is well-spoken, funny, and intelligent, you begin to think highly of him.

I could see McCain, if he's comfortable enough, being able to joke about the "visual" differences at the town halls and come out looking better. For example, after an hour of answering questions, he could quip "That ends the essay portion of this contest. When we return, we will have the swimsuit competition." Get people laughing. Remind them that we are electing a leader, not someone who looks great on the beach.

Yeah, McCain loves to take questions from the little people. /s
