Coal train ambushed near power station in climate change protest (UK)
The Guardian ^ | 06-14-08 | Martin Wainwright

Climate change campaigners halted a coal train yesterday outside Drax, Britain's biggest power station, and shovelled its contents on to the only line into the plant. More than 20 tonnes of coal blocked the tracks as protesters strung ropes between the train and the girders of a river bridge as police watched from a distance. More than 30 protesters swarmed aboard the 21-wagon freight service. Hidden in banks of cow parsley beside the line to Drax, North Yorkshire they struck at 8am after watching two empty trains arrive to collect ash in the previous two hours. The train had halted after unwittingly obeying an exact copy of railway emergency procedures. Posing as rail staff in fluorescent jackets, a small group of protesters waved red flags in a precise sequence to stop the EWS freight train on an iron girder bridge over the river Aire. Most of the group then clambered up the bridge and dropped food, water and bedding for at least 24 hours from its overhead beams on to the flat tops of the trucks. "We've enough for at least two days," said Ben Tennyson, one of the Climate Camp activists, as a mobile lavatory was swung aboard by a woman campaigner dressed as a canary - coal-mining's traditional warning of danger. A banner was then draped along one of the trucks reading Leave it in the Ground - the slogan of the group's "total war" on mining and burning coal. "We're stopping the train because it's absolute nonsense to be burning coal when we should be tackling climate change," another protester told a woman commuter, late for work, who was one of a jam of motorists blocked at nearby Hirst Courtney level crossing.

Note that the police initially stood by and did nothing to prevent this terrorism.

These are not dissidents exercising their rights, they are arrogant, narcissistic, terrorists bent on asserting their power regardless of the cost to others.

Their ban on DDT has cost millions of lives in Africa and Asia, their ongoing opposition to development in the third world threatens to consume millions more, and their campaign against western energy independence could well have even more sinister motives.

They are a menace, a totalitarian political movement potentially as deadly as communism or the Third Reich. Note that the eco-beasts have openly declared "total war." They should have it.

The "conservation" movement was hijacked long ago by leftists, and bastardized into their latest "crisis" used for justifying government control. We shouldn't be surprised that it looks very much like their previous "crises" - namely national and international socialism.

The environment is the new proletariat, but their means and ends are the same.

If they manage to shut down the plant it will be interesting to see how that goes over.

If they don't then they fail to stop any coal burning and the extra cost of cleaning up the mess will be passed on to consumers and the diesel loaders used will result in a bigger carbon footprint.

****

Only 1 train? Awwww, not good enough. A million trains should stop “climate change”.

The Police waited a whole day before they did anything. Todays cops have had their nuts removed by do gooders. A lot of them are so demoralized they won’t do anything unless ordered to do so. It’s not just Britain either. I have experienced Police failing to do their duty twice in the last week here in Australia.

Where the heck do these people think the coal came from in the first place?

Carbon dioxide was ingested by plants. The plants converted that into carbon based compounds. Then the plants died. Millions of years later, these compounds turned into coal.

Burn that coal, and the process will start over again. With new plants that will grow and thrive and provide food for other organisms. Even nutjob eco-whackos.

“Why were they not shot?”

It would look bad on TV.

Without the reliable support of the activist media and the billions in free propaganda they provide to the eco-terrorists, these lawless gangs would be stamped out in a matter of hours.

The eco-terrorist movement is essentially an auxiliary arm of the media-industrial complex, providing the MSM with nice sound-bite friendly scare stories and lots of picturesque rebel-in-action footage. In return the media provide protection and propaganda. Many eco-activists are in fact schooled in the media trades, it is a major alternative path for mass-com grads who fail to make the big-time or even the yokel news.

You can’t live in a modern industrial society (or postmodern information society) without plenty of electric power.

These people are deciding for everyone that they can’t live this way. And they are pretty much the same group that would be protesting and stopping via lawsuit construction of a new nuclear plant, which doesn’t have the “carbon footprint” of a coal plant.

Exactly. What incentive do the police have to act in these situations? They can only get in trouble. Because the people don’t stand up for their rights and the politicians pee their panties at the thought of taking bold action.
