Gordon Brown called for prudence in the kitchen last night, telling us not to throw away so much food.
With prices soaring, he suggested we could save up to £8 a week by making our shopping go further.
Waste could be reduced by simple steps such as storing fruit and vegetables in the fridge to make them last longer.
While the Prime Minister was preoccupied with his household management tips, a joint report by the U.S. government and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development was warning world food prices will rise by an average of 5 per cent this year - and keep climbing for another decade.
Mr Brown, meanwhile, wants us to rediscover the thriftiness that was once a watchword for British housewives.

This guy is such a loser!
If someone told me to cut back, I would tell them to quit putting food in my gas tank first.
I hate to sound rude and I apologize if I offend anyone, but the pictures I have seen lately from Britian is that there isn’t a whole lot of wasting food in the UK.
So, am I suppose to eat that sausage that’s been in the back of my fridge for about a month now and NOT throw it out? What about the slimy lettuce or spotted cauliflower? Should I eat or throw out?
Unfrickingridiculous. Soon to come to the US.
Mama Brown:
1.) Chew each bite 30 times!
2.) Keep your mouth closed while you chew, ya yob.
3.) And clean your plate, mate—there are people starving on AirIndia.
Sounds like a lead up to rationing.
sorry, but he’s right. People should plan their meals so that there is less waste. No one wants to throw food away because it’s just like throwing money away. This isn’t a law- it’s just good common sense- even if it did come out a loon.
I plan my meals for the week- clean my fridge every week too- check dates- use leftovers in a day or two- when they are still safe and good to eat. I want my money to be used wisely- and I want to teach my kids not to waste.
What cheek. Imagine a leader, actually giving advice and suggesting things to the citizens!!
Doesn’t matter. Pretty soon, the poor Brit’s will have to 1) get rid of their dogs, 2) eliminate all pork products from their shelves, and 3) close all Christian churches - in order to placate the up and coming 4th century religion. Meanwhile, they’ll naively continue to elect loony-left types for their ludicrous excuse for a government. Hopefully, they’ll have another civil war (a-la Cromwell era) before it’s too late. (Remember, Brits, that there is PLENTY of land left in Saudi Arabia for your muzzies.
Americans also waste so much food. I eat at a local buffet style restraunt every so often. The amount of food people leave on their plate is staggering.
The worst are the little kids who load up their plates(or their parents do it for them) and eat 2 bites. They sure don't leave the dessert plates empty!!!
Gordon would make a wonderful wife. Clean those plates Gordy...
“Sounds like a lead up to rationing.”
That’s exactly what it is.
This reminds me so much of Jimmy Carter’s advice to America re. rising fuel prices. He wanted us to turn down the heater & wear a sweater while indoors.
Pathetic!
Yea, I just wanted to make a statement about mixing our food with our fuel.
PING to some of my FRUGAL friends!!!!!!
This this ruling apply to buying spicy food for children?
“sorry, but hes right. People should plan their meals so that there is less waste. “
How far do you take this? To the point of legislation? I still have 9/11 food stuffs that need to thrown out and replaced. More than half the time I buy a loaf of fresh bread I make three sandwiches and the remainder of the loaf ends up moldy before I get back to it. Sometimes I toss it in the freezer and end up with 5 half loaves of months old frozen bread that end up getting tossed.
That guy need lose weight anybody seen Gordie Brown in those tight business sight look like two pig wrestle under blanket
Brown must be Mayor Bloomers evil twin.
