Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s (Ariz.) latest television ad says that the country is in worse shape now than it was before President Bush began his second term.
“Washington’s broken. John McCain knows it,” the ad says. “We’re worse off than we were four years ago.”
The ad, titled “Broken,” shows that McCain is, at least in part, running away from President Bush’s record and looking to win favor with the centrist voters who have supported him in the past.
The ad, which is slated to run in key states, comes after Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) made a point of including images of McCain with Bush in his last two ads hitting the Republican on his energy policy.
The McCain spot, in which a narrator is referring to the Arizona senator as “the original maverick,” makes a special point of saying that McCain “has taken on Big Tobacco, drug companies, fought corruption in both parties.”
“He’ll reform Wall Street, battle Big Oil, make America prosper again,” the ad says.
Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton responded by saying that “Sen. McCain wants Americans to forget that during the Republican primary, he said that Americans were better off than we were eight years ago, and that he thinks we’ve made ‘great progress economically’.”
Burton added that McCain “wants us to forget that he’s fully embraced the Bush policies he once opposed, and bragged about supporting those policies ‘more than 90 percent of time’.”
How bad off are we after four years? Let's see, the war in Iraq is just about all won; no international terror attacks on the U.S. homeland since the fall of 2001; the economy is still growing; unemployment is still low; illegal immigrants are starting to leave of their own volition.
Yep, there a few major things that have gone wrong, but overall we're in pretty good shape.
Probably the worst thing that happened during President Bush's second term is that the nation is stuck with McCain and Obama as the dominant presidential nominees.
For those of us who have been watching him for the last twenty years, this comes as no surprise at all.
Every time I think I’ll send McCain a few bucks and get a bumper sticker, he comes out with this kind of crap.
I’m also tired of the CinC getting fragged.
George Bush is a brave decent leader. I think he could beat both McCain and Obama in a 3 way race. I KNOW he would beat Obama.
McCain must have the most stupid out-of-touch campaign staff ever. All that red meat to go after in the Obama camp, yet they spend precious time and campaign money gnawing on the President.
No thanks to Juan "Amnesty" McCain.

Write something really nice about him on the internet, contact his campaign, and then they'll send you a mug.
For a guy who has been in the House or the Senate since 1982, I find it interesting that McCain would herald how much Washington, D.C. is broken. Whether he knows it or not, the body of which he is a member, has an approval rating of 9%.
John, 91% of the public don’t approve of the job you and your fellow members of Congress have been doing.
Don’t try to tell us what is broken. We’re way ahead of you reverse ace.

McCain couldn’t stand being slightly ahead in two polls. He had to take affirmative steps to assure that he remained the “underdog.” sarc/
The one problem with your post, is that you left John’s picture out of it.
You’re better off getting a bumper sticker that says “No Obama......No Communist”.

I already got a photo of he and Cindy from him. And a nasty letter from the RNC accusing me of “giving up on the party” cuz I haven’t renewed my membership. A very bad letter.
But, I’ll sign up eventually.
Perhaps the ad is referring to the dysfunctional Congress, and not to the Bush Administration. After all, just two years of SanFranNan’s and Dingy Harry’s “leadership” took Congress’ approval rating down to 9%.
McCain once again reinforces my tag line.
I’m in Ohio, and I am a Corvette hobbyist.
In my neck of the woods, people are quite uneasy about the economy. The housing/mortgage crisis happened on GWB’s watch, in case you didn’t notice. The consumer economy here is very slow.
I contact lots of people from all over in the Corvette hobby, via online forums. Used Corvette sales are in the dumper. VERY slow. Energy costs are only part of it. I hear it over and over again, the economy is bad.
Imagine you’re running for president. Do you:
A: Tell people they don’t know what they’re talking about, the economy is fine. Elect me and I’ll keep things how they are!
B: Empathize, throw the current administration under the bus, (since they’re done anyway), and try to get elected?
The McCain mutiny...
