Georgia says its forces have withdrawn from the separatist enclave of South Ossetia, and that Russian troops are now in control of the regional capital.

An interior ministry spokesman told the BBC it was not a military defeat but a necessary step to protect civilians from a "humanitarian catastrophe".

Georgia says Russia has brought an additional 10,000 soldiers across its frontiers, readying for a raid.

Powerline comments:

The war in Georgia is expanding, but it's hard to get clear accounts of what is going on.

********************EXCERPT*****************

What is most striking about the crisis is how strongly it recalls the bad old days of the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin has cast aside any pretense of having given up the reins of power, and is directing the Russian Army. Here is how Pravda is covering the conflict:

War between Russia and Georgia orchestrated from USA:

Russian officials believe that it was the USA that orchestrated the current conflict. The chairman of the State Duma Committee for Security, Vladimir Vasilyev, believes that the current conflict is South Ossetia is very reminiscent to the wars in Iraq and Kosovo.

Russia: Again Savior of Peace and Life:

The international community collectively held their breath waiting for the reaction of Russia after the savage, brutal, criminal attack by Georgia on South Ossetia.

And from the Candidates:

"Meaningless Statements"

***********************EXCERPT***********************

Barack Obama has been criticized for acting as though he is already President. That's natural, since the actions in question have been presumptuous: the pseudo-Presidential seal, the speech in Germany, and so on. Today, one might say that John McCain is acting as though he is already President, but in a substantive and positive way. In his response to Russia's invasion of Georgia, McCain is giving us a preview of what sort of President he would be.

McCain has strongly and unequivocally come out in support of our ally Georgia, while placing the onus for the war squarely where it belongs, on Russia. In this, he has aligned himself with our most loyal European allies. Obama, on the other hand, issued the sort of vapid statement that would ingratiate him with the State Department while not requiring any distraction from his Hawaii vacation. An interesting point, by the way: McCain is supposed to be the old guy, but Obama is the one who needs a vacation.

Well, I liked this last few paragraphs from your first link:

“In the common sense-free world of Barack Obama, advocating for a fledgling democracy that is trying to align itself with the West and is threatened by the imperial aspirations of Russia constitutes a “conflict of interest.”

The McCain camp responded with this statement:

“The Obama campaign's attacks on Randy Scheunemann are disgraceful. Mr. Scheunemann proudly represented a small democracy that is one of our closest allies in a very dangerous region. Today, many are dead and Georgia is in crisis, yet the Obama campaign has offered nothing more than cheap and petty political attacks that are echoed only by the Kremlin. The reaction of the Obama campaign to this crisis, so at odds with our democratic allies and yet so bizarrely in sync with Moscow, doesn't merely raise questions about Senator Obama’s judgment—it answers them.

The American people once elected Jimmy Carter to defend their interests against Leonid Brezhnev and the Russian Empire. It will be interesting to see whether they are willing to do it again.”

RT just reported that the Georgian troops did not pull out of Ossetia. Looks like a he said she said situation. Russia demands a pull out as a precondition for cease fire. When Georgia pulls out, Russia claims otherwise. RT is also quoting the Russian president who said that the war criminals in Georgia will be brought to justice. This is likely to be their pretext to further their invasion of Georgia.

Here is the soviet propaganda station:

Brought to justice, eh? Sakashvili had better run for the nearest embassy, and give all his food to his dog before he eats it.

From the geography in the picture, it looks like they have a foothold on the other side of the mountains that seperate Russia from Georgia - and good bit in.

AP is reporting that this is a withdrawal by Georgia's forces away from Tskhinvali, while remaining in South Ossetia, to allow a humanitarian corridor for wounded and civilians to escape.

Why doesn’t Georgia blow the Roki tunnel? That would cut off most of the Russian forces supplies.
