Cheney threatens Russia over Georgia (Russia is Blaming the US)

US Vice President Dick Cheney has threatened Russia after the country was forced to reply Georgia's attack on South Ossetia's region.

In a phone conversation with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Sunday, Cheney said Russia's military actions in Georgia 'must not go unanswered'.

Continuation of Russian attack 'would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community,' Cheney's press secretary, Lee Ann McBride, quoted him as telling Saakashvili.

"The vice president expressed the United States' solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratically elected government in the face of this threat to Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," McBride said.

Earlier, Chairman of Russia's State Duma Security Committee Vladimir Vasilyev announced that US helped Georgia start military operation in South Ossetia.

"The further the situation unfolds, the more the world will understand that Georgia would never be able to do all this without America," said Vasilyev.

Georgian military forces launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia on Thursday evening hours before the start of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Russia, in response, moved its forces to the region.

The conflict has left at least 2000 people dead.

He!! no. But in this scenario we would have first granted Texas there on quasi autonomy with Mexico.

If we dont intigrate the hispanic population into our culture this could be a real problem. Of course we would lose South Florida first.

We fought our own Civil War because of this and it could happen again.

Yes I know North Ossetia is still part of Russia but that is their choice not ours.

So I take it you think the US should be broken up into the Confederate States of America and the Union of Northern Aggressors? (That analogy doesn't quite hold, because at least the South had a legitimate claim on the land. I guess a better example is whether or not you think illegal aliens in Arizona should be able to hold their own election and vote to be annexed to Mexico).

Historically, the native land of the Ossetic people is just south of the Don river far far north of the area in Russia now considered North Ossetia. If the Russians want to create a Ossetic homeland, let them do it with their own property rather than sovereign Georgian territory.

What is your reference on South Ossetia attacking Georgia.

I don't have a link; I had a friend in Gori sending me emails about it. I have another friend that has been helping with English translations over the past few years who has sent me copies of domestic Georgian news reports as well. This isn't some new conflict, and the Russians have been staging actions for quite a while in various efforts to destabilize the region and disrupt Georgian internal affairs. Rebels (or terrorists or whatever you'd like to call them) out of South Ossetia have been attacking neighboring areas for a while now (car bombs, destroying infrastructure like power transmission lines and railroads, etc.).

Your original question was to ask why we were blaming the Russians. The reason is that the Russians are orchestrating this. Several years ago they brought South Ossetian terrorists to camps in Russia and trained them as saboteurs (organized by Col. Anatoly Sysoyev). They continue to train, arm, and pay salaries to these people. Some of them have been caught and have confessed on Georgian television.

I suppose it is possible that the Russian government is unaware that their military officers are arming and funding terrorists, but it doesn't seem likely.

That is one of the reasons why I’m voting for McCain.. Granted he is not a true conservative (but who is), but he is Commander in Chief material.

That's the reason I'm voting for him too. I can't imagine having someone as naive as Obama being our Commander in Chief in the dangerous world we live in today. It really scares me.

Not disputing your on hand information that is why I was asking. If your info is correct then it does appear Russia has quietly been stoking the fires then come running to the rescue.

We did the civil war and we Lost. We are stronger as a whole because we are one country.

However you would relocate the people of South Ossetia again. How is this going to solve the problem, where are they going to call home.

And yes if we dont integrate the illegial aliens in the US within our population we will have the same proplem within 1 generation.

It’s about Kosovo and, as Pat Buchannon puts it, about spending too much time and effort at being in Russia’s face, and Russia’s place. In particular the idea of wanting to include Georgia in NATO is idiotic. Germany is averaging 1.4 children right now. Anybody who thinks they’d be willing to put as many as one of those 1.4 children into harms way for the sake of Georgia is clearly smoking too much reefer.

...we don’t have a dog in this fight...

I will note that some of the Georgian soldiers in the pictures I've seen are wearing US style Woodland Camo. One was even wearing the new USMC MARPAT cammies.

Looks like Russia wants control of the oils pipeline.

I believe that sums it up pretty nicely. If ever there were a reason for the US government to quit blocking the exploration and development of domestic petrolium, this would be it. Of course, given that the democRATS are on the same side as Russia (especially old, communist Russia), I don't see much change in their approach to the issue.

Correction to my post #54.

I understand that a survey was taken in 1971 by an Austrian colonel. It pertained to the general area known as Kosovo. Hard to authenticate. It was done in private for the Austro-Hungarian authorities. His figures:

64% Serbs
32% Albanians
The rest are Roma etc.

What is known is that by 1899 the Serbs were a sizeable minority.
