Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee thinks having former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the vice presidential nominee is a bad idea, but not because Romney is a Mormon.
"I think a lot of people, not just social conservatives, but a lot of the Republicans I know are not necessarily comfortable with Romney," he told CBS. "But it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with inconsistencies in positions he's held, and that's it."
Huckabee, a former Baptist minister whose long-shot presidential campaign was kept alive mainly by support from Evangelicals, was commenting on organized efforts by some of his backers in Michigan and Ohio to urge Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) not to choose Romney as running mate.
McCain told the Weekly Standard on Wednesday that he was open to choosing a vice presidential nominee who supports abortion.
Several current and former Republican officials have been reported to be in the running as McCain's vice president, including Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.
Romney, a former CEO of Bain and Co. who ended his bid for the Republican nomination in February, is reportedly on top of the shortlist. Pundits regard him as a good match for McCain, who has struggled to change perceptions that he is less adept on economic issues than Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL).
But many critics have also cited Romney's being a Mormon as a huge obstacle to his political aspirations. He has also been repeatedly criticized for changing his views on abortion and gay marriages; he initially supported abortion and same-sex unions but is now opposed to both. His home state of Massachusetts was the first state to legalize gay marriages.
A conservative political action committee, Government Is Not God, said as early as March that Romney "utterly unacceptable"as a vice presidential nominee.
Huckabee ended his bid for the Republican nomination in March after losing considerable support among Evangelical voters to former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is known for his opposition to abortion. He surprised everyone by winning the first contest of the primary season in Iowa, but failed to follow up with any other victories.
It would be weird, but very interesting.
I don’t diagree that another POTUS candidate would have been better. But none that tried could cut the mustard and convience the voting Republicans that they deserved the nomination over McCain. Thus the Republicans are stuck with him for this election. We had a lack luster field this time around not that some weren’t good people but they weren’t POTUS material in the eyes of the voters.
Weird isn’t the word! haha
Globalists and nationalists get along worse than Russians and Georgians though.
Actually, we had a decent field. Better than usual. Compare to 2000.
Keyes still the same bombastic fool.
McCain still the same backstabbing RINO.
Huck better than Gary Bauer? draw
Tancredo better than Pat Buchanan? yep
Jim Gilmour better than LAMAR!? Yep
Tommy Thompson better than Kasich? Yep
Romney better than Orrin Hatch? Yep
Ron Paul better than Liddy Dole? Yep
Rudy better than Steve Forbes? No
Hunter better than GWB? Yep.
Paul?
now we have a comedy thread.
Brownback better than Quayle? Toss up
Better than usual?..... Not in the voters opinions and that is the opinions that count. This bunch couldn’t defeat McCain after he lost to Bush in 2000...
I blame the stalking horse for Mccain’s victory.
Believe me, I’m laughing too. See my post 83.
But let’s face it, there wasn’t a candidate running who has any understanding of free market economics comparable to Paul.
The only reason he’s going after Romney is Romney is a pathetic fake and a liar.
Not that I like the Huckster any better than Myth.
I think he has had a very bad education. His dad, some sort of pressure to carry on, going to law school which I consider a form of brain damage, not getting out and about in this great, profane, hog slaughtering nation.
Harvard, finance, old New England dying Republican party. Even living and accepting as near normal the pathetic, sick state of Massachusetts politics.
None of this has served him well.
The GOP did not select McCain without the overwhelming help of the MSM (which saw him as a very weak candidate).
Everyone will have to deal with the results of the “religions right” influence on our national political condition. Conservative influence is weakened by their fanatical “litmus test” requirements for political leaders.
Proof: The “religious right” killed the republican party in California and look at what we have now. The most populous state in the U.S. is an automatic democrat win.
Romney's health care plan was corrupted by that state's democrats after he left. Romney is clearly more qualified and capable that any other candidate out there. Unless Obama gets elected (barf), it is not usually the case that anyone from either the far left or far right captures enough votes to get elected. What we need is someone who has the mental, emotional, and experiential maturity along with the managerial skill to run the most complex organization in the world. Check the resumes, Romney is the only one that qualifies. There could not be a better Vice President.
Will MittyWitty get off the stage already. He’s soooooo jealous of Eric Cantor
Actuall Romney is a draft6 dodger himself...
Did a Bill Clinton and sat out the war in a mansion in Paris...
Romney is definitely not fit to be Commander-in-Chief...
And he has no proven leadership qualities..
We need someone to lead out country...
Not referee Intramural Sports Day
Huck must be so (Expletive removed) jealous of everything about Mitt.
________________________________________
Well Governor Huckabee is not jealous of old Romney’s age...
Romney is much older than Huckabee...
About 10 years...
And looks every day of it...
Romney’s father also helped him dodge the draft...
Serving in the military might have made a man of him....
I say get Ron Paul for VP. sounds good to me, but not going to happen.
Wasn’t it McCain that said he’d consider a Pro-choice VP?
Wasn’t it McCain that said gays could adopt?
Wasn’t it McCain that said he didn’t understand economics?
McCain sold out on global warming, opportunistically opposed drilling in ANWR, demonizes oil companies in his recent ads and promoted the McCain-Kennedy-Edwards patients bill of right
