Ohio says no to voting machine ‘sleepovers’ By STEPHEN MAJORS, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 37 minutes ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Poll workers will not be allowed to take voting machines home for safekeeping in the days before the November presidential election because the practice known as “sleepovers” is an unacceptable security risk, the state elections chief said Tuesday.

Taking machines home makes it nearly impossible to keep track of what happens to a machine or memory card once it goes into the custody of a poll worker, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said.

The changes are meant to address actual security concerns — including the fear that machines could be tampered with — and national perceptions of Ohio’s election system, which has come under fire in recent years, Brunner said.

“We want Ohio’s voters and the rest of the nation to see that we have prepared a transparent process of transporting voting equipment, ballots and supplies,” Brunner said in a statement.

Brunner was elected in 2006 with a promise to improve a system marred by scattered problems of long lines and poorly trained poll workers.

Twenty-four of Ohio’s 88 counties have used sleepovers. Local elections officials argued that the practice makes it easier to take machines to polling sites. Otherwise, they would have to hire moving companies to distribute the machines at a cost of thousands of dollars.

Brunner said federal money will reimburse counties for the added cost, which she expects to be about $100,000 statewide. Elections officials also will be allowed to move and store the machines at polling places ahead of time, provided the sites have fire protection equipment and other security measures.

Counties may also set up regional storage locations where poll workers can pick up machines on the morning of Election Day and take them to polling locations.

Local officials, who have clashed with Brunner on a number of election procedure issues, were pleased that Brunner gave them the option of moving the equipment as they saw fit.

“She allowed for the counties to implement their own way of doing this,” said Shannon Leininger, director of the Ashland County Board of Elections. The county has used sleepovers for both paper ballots and its 204 touch-screen voting machines.

(This version CORRECTS the number of counties using sleepovers to 24, instead of 23.)

Oh yes, I know. The govenor of PA is going to vote for her first ballot, and DiFi is missing the convention because of a broken ankle.

If you can stand HuffPo...http://www.huffingtonpost.com/judah-freed/the-clinton-convention-co_b_119747.html

I still think she’d lose, the party is so disarrayed, but she’s way more dangerous to actually win in November.

“You have to know that right now there is SERIOUS discussion in the smoke-filled rooms about replacing Obama with Hillary-—how to do it, what the damage would be, and whether it’s even possible at this point.”

I think you’re correct in that assessment. The super-delegates can make it entirely possible as they’re not committed to the voters. Number 2, I believe that if in fact that happened, she’d also HAVE to take Obama as a running mate.

If McCain wins the national vote, won’t he win the electors in the states that just changed their laws to commit to the national majority winner?

Those laws require states representing a majority of electoral votes pass similar legislation before they go in force. Actually that is unconstutional, because by being conditional, it is a compact between states, and under the US Constitution only Congress sanction compacts between states.

No, that doesn’t go into effect until a certain threshold of electoral votes is one the line. It’s written into the details of the law. I don’t remember the specifics.

The interstate compact, that would give each member state's electors to the national popular vote winner, goes into effect only when the member states equal at least 270 electoral votes (i.e., a majority of the Electoral College). They are very far from that mark.

Other than a Dem war, what good will come of choosing Hillary? Talk about fissures.

McCain had better not select a pro-abortionist vice president or his brief moment of fame will go down in flames!!!!!!

Will tomorrow show McCain further ahead? My bet would be yes.

It's quite possible we'll see the impact of Obama's Saddleback debacle. I suspect that most people did not watch the forum (wasn't Michael Phelps swimming for gold #8 at the same time?) but Obama's people did some polling on the viewers and they went ape-sh** when they saw the results. In their panic someone released this mem with the always-compliant Andrea Mitchell that McCain "cheated".

Well that made that whole Saddleback results go viral. In the age of YouTube you don't have to watch an event live and most people prefer not to. So now after a few days everyone knows how badly Obama sucked and how good McCain looked.

"That's above my pay grade" may well become Obama's version of the Kitty Dukakis rape question. And Obama's problem is that people are starting to laugh at him and Obama is lacking in many things, above all a sense of humor.

And today we have more whinning and nonsense from the Obama camp. "John McCain is a patriot and now he should call me a patriot too!" Yeah, there's presidential timber for you.

So what can the Dems do now? They can't dump Obama if things begin to spiral badly because the blacks will riot and the Dems won't just lose this election, they'll lose the next three elections. Hillary probably won't join the ticket if she see's blood in the water. Why would it help her to join a losing ticket when she can position herself for a 2012 coronation? And what would be worse than to help Obama and then be stuck as vp for possibly the next 8 years?

So the trend lines are all looking good. Iraq is improving steadily. The Dems are on the wrong side of the drilling issue. They're going to nominate a neophyte who has absolute NO experience and NO accomplishments other than an ability to make a speech.

If things continue like this I'm gonna sit back and make me some popcorn.

You can bet that there is a loophole that if the Pubbies get a plurality, but not 50% + 1 vote, that it won't count as 'majority', but would for a Dim.

Agreed.

The Dems are experiencing a heavy dose of buyers remorse. Instead of nominating someone who would be even money (or better)to win the White House they went all in on a shallow community activist all in the name of Change. I have a feeling the only change the Dems will experience will be at the top once they throw Howard Dean overboard.

The Clintons have got to be loving this. If I were advising Hillary I would tell her to promote herself at the convention in order to set up 2012.

Finally, I never thought a floor fight at the convention was possible - until today...
