St. Paul, Minnesota -- The GOP is starting its meetings -- scaled down, for sure, but happening -- here at the Xcel Energy Center, and the buzz is huge: how does the news of Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter's pregnancy upset the cart? Or does it?
GOP folks here roundly insist no; Democrats outside the convention center say, are you kidding? Of course it does.
On one hand: Pro-life types love the fact that the daughter is getting married and keeping the child, and social conservatives are very into the Alaska Governor.
We saw that this morning at the Califonria delegation breakfast, where speaker after speaker -- like former California Secretary of State -- hit the talking points that she has more experience than Barack Obama.

It will fizzle out in 48 to 72 hrs.
The Dem's are digging a serious hole if they try to make anything of it. Just my opinion, but I think it makes the Palin's an even EASIER couple to relate to.
HUSSEIN`S MOTHER WAS AN UNWED PREGNANT TEENAGER,
HOW DOES THAT PLAY OR IS IT THE TYPICAL DOUBLE-STANDARD OF
BIASED DOMINANT MEDIA?
How will it play?
Not nearly as the SF Chronicle would like.
No cover-up, no problem.
Big Tent. Big Family. The Palins will handle it just fine. No running, no hiding. No cover up.
Yep! This will reverberate like a whisper at a rock concert. It’s a non-issue... and the fact that the left is making noise about it shows just how desperate they are.
I still don’t see what a 17 year old pregnant girl has to do with electing the President of the United States but I don’t do “recreational drugs” while standing around “hoping” for my ship to come in either.
I’m asking whether I would intentionally put my daughter through this sort of national attention by agreeing to run for VP. I hope I wouldn’t, but I’m obviously not as driven as Palin.
This also tells us that if the daughter of a social conservative can come out as being pregnant before marriage, even if she is getting married, there’s no longer any shame whatsoever to this. It tells me a lot more than if this had been the daughter of a liberal.
Nonetheless, I wish nothing than the absolute best to Bristol and her future family.
It might even win over some Democrats, and as long as the kid gets married and has the baby, the values vote will stay with her.
I think you’re right.
I also think if they attack the Palins on this it will destroy Obama’s credibility with a significant portion of their younger supporters, many of whom have undoubtedly found themselves in the same situation in their lives.
There’s also that whole bit about the Dems supporting unwed teenage mothers. They destroy all credibility on that related issue as well.
I guess it’ll play out with Dems attacking a teenage girl?
That’s pretty much their bread and butter nowadays.
Palin should drop out. It’s too much of a tabloid distraction, and the next round of attacks will be about her being a bad mother, putting her career ahead of her children’s well-being. This is only going to get worse for the GOP ticket.
God GOD, why didn’t McCain choose Romney?!?
They made a bad move here, and Obama's statement today shows he knows it and is scared of the repercussions. It's going to benefit Palin and the Republicans immensely, especially after her speech on Wednesday.
how will it play? we are happy for the family. we are happy they are going to let this baby be born.
it will end up being a HUGE plus for Sarah P, in that she now gets to discuss just how important it is for mothers to take their babies to term.
Exactly. Besides Bauer and some other Evangelical leaders said much of the same. A bit embarassing, yes. Bad timing, yeah, I suppose. But truly a non-story in the long run for the election.
Troll.
