Palin Shocker: How Will It Play?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/01/08 | Carla Marinucci

St. Paul, Minnesota -- The GOP is starting its meetings -- scaled down, for sure, but happening -- here at the Xcel Energy Center, and the buzz is huge: how does the news of Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter's pregnancy upset the cart? Or does it?

GOP folks here roundly insist no; Democrats outside the convention center say, are you kidding? Of course it does.

On one hand: Pro-life types love the fact that the daughter is getting married and keeping the child, and social conservatives are very into the Alaska Governor.

We saw that this morning at the Califonria delegation breakfast, where speaker after speaker -- like former California Secretary of State -- hit the talking points that she has more experience than Barack Obama.

Or whine and cry for their candidates to turn tail and run...when the going gets a bit sticky.

Although there is “support” for the Palin’s now...I think you have a point. This will be a distraction...and a big issue for real Christian conservatives

Do you know any "real Christian conservatives"? You posted this comment on another post, and my response here will be the same as it was there -- if you bother to crack open your Bible you will understand that Christians know that they are not perfect. We are saved only by Grace. We don't celebrate sin -- but when a brother or sister falls, we don't step on them while they are down. Repent and be saved is the byword of your "real Christian conservative" friends...

How in the world are you ever going to advocate abstinence-only education now...when the VP candidate has a pregnant teenage daughter? The jokes will be cruel

Sure, how can we possibly condemn any sin since we are all sinners? Let's all roll up into a ball and crawl under or bed... Abstinence-only before marriage is the right way -- and just because some will stumble doesn't mean that we give up.

I think after all the glad-handing...Palin just may be asked to step aside

Its not surprising how the selection of a conservative, Christian candidate on the National ticket has brought out all the screaming harpies... Mrs. Palin will be attack, of this there is no doubt. We'll keep her in our prayers.

Bill Kristol just ripped off Mort Kondracke’s head over this. Go Bill!

Kristol was pissed as he should been.

I think Mort must drink a couple of large glasses of Kool-aid before coming on air

“Palin should drop out. It’s too much of a tabloid distraction, and the next round of attacks will be about her being a bad mother, putting her career ahead of her children’s well-being. This is only going to get worse for the GOP ticket.

God GOD, why didn’t McCain choose Romney?!?”

You forgot the sarcasm tag.

Nice going. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Republicans and conservatives to help our cause and keep Commie Barry away from the White House. That's the team spirit I've come to expect from the handwringers.

This ain't beanbag, pal.

Exactly!

I’ve been switching channels and have ventured to CNN and other cable channels that I normally rarely if ever venture to; and, I’m sick of the stories on this. Whatever happened to laying off Chelsea, Gore’s son, Kerry’s kids, Obama saying to lay off Michelle and his kids, etc., etc.

I feel so sorry for this poor 17-year old. It’s clear from the story I read that most of the hometown people knew of this but weren’t speaking of it. The Dims think that they can tarnish Sarah and McCain by publishing the mistake of this teenager, which I find sickening. I think I’m going to start writing the stations and/or posting to some of their forums - - which I have never done. But, I’m really steamed about the DBM smiling and reporting this story - -wonder if they’d like it to be talked about so much if it were their daughter or sister. Sorry for the vent but the MSM has really PO’d me on this. and, NObamas, statement is BS, his staff doesn’t have to spread the story because his other staff, the DBM, will do his dirty work for him.

Hopefully, it will backfire bigtime on all of them with Dr. Dobson’s statement and most reasonable Americans thinking about it and getting ticked for the reporting, too, since their family and/or friend have been in a similar situation at one time or another.

Donning my asbestos ... and speaking from 40+ years' experience following this stuff ... I do not think this will fizzle out in 48 to 72 hours and I think the political reality is that it's going to become difficult for Gov. Palin to remain on the ticket. I say that with the utmost sadness, because I am impressed as all get-out with her.

I do not say this because of anything to do with her daughter's pregnancy. IMHO, that's irrelevant. And I hope some of the human debris ... I would say flotsam and jetsam, but that would be an insult to flotsam and jetsam ... who put out some of the ca-ca on the nut left blogs over the weekend rot in hell for it.

I say it because of the deal with the trooper. (I refuse to use the suffix "gate.") I say that even if it turns out, in the end, that she did nothing wrong there. The thing is, if it's gotten to the point where she's had to hire a lawyer to help her deal with it, it can do nothing but distract her, and McCain, from the job at hand, plus until the situation is resolved, and that is not likely to be prior to the elction, it's going to be a "death by a thousand cuts" scenario hanging over her head.

I know it would PO the base. I would expect Rush to wash his hands of McCain once and for all if it happened. But folks, it's two months until the election. Again, the political reality, and I'm talking about the political reality that actually IS and not the political reality we'd like there to be, is that it's going to become very tough for her. Can you not see where this would be a very problematic distraction?

Flame away everybody, my hide is tough.

“Palin should drop out.”

What’s your IQ Bird? I’m sure mine’s much higher than yours. /S

Actually this is masterful. A higher power than Carl was obviously involved in this. It’s one thing for Sarah to give birth to a Down’s baby. Few can truly relate to that, other than to assume most wouldn’t. However a teenage pregnancy is something everyone can relate to...

It’s the second “burnt stick in the eye” for Obama in as many days. The guy who wouldn’t want one of his daughters “punished” with a baby. (off to planed parenthood we go my dear)

You can't be serious!!!, are you? You and RooRooBird are a couple of DodoBirds. Sarah isn't going to be asked to "step aside" anywhere...........except momentarily during the Oath of Office at John's inagural. Sheesh. And RooRooBird is still talking about Romney. Romney's the one that's been forced to step aside and he'll never be back. Do you guys understand how American society even works? How 'bout the Political aspects?. Sarah's story from today, I believe, will help her in the long run. Many many many people can relate to her situation as a Parent. And Sarah's news release commentary was perfect. End of story.

Pumas will be watching. Yet again, the Dems are attacking the women.

Who would'a ever thunk it would turn out this way? That in a McCain political JuJutsu, the Hillary supporters would turn on the very party (Dems) which brought them to the dance.

It’s too much of a tabloid distraction, and the next round of attacks will be about her being a bad mother, putting her career ahead of her children’s well-being. This is only going to get worse for the GOP ticket.

It will only get worse for the GOP ticket if Palin does drop out. Which she evidently is not even considering, after all, she accepted the spot (and McCain offered it to her) with full knowledge of the situation and the media attention it would generate.

If Palin remains strong, the blowback on the Dems will be far worse in the long run. But if Palin drops out as you recommend, it will be a disaster for the GOP ticket that they will likley not recover from.

Besides, all of this media attention is going to ensure a huge audience for Palin's speech Wednesday night. Oprah nation laps this kind of stuff up and many of them who otherwise would have voted for Obama might just change their minds when they hear Sarah speak.

Because if he chose Romney with all the houses, etc., the media would have been even worse toward Romney and how he doesn’t relate to the little guy. How about all his flip flops? Do you think the media would have stayed quiet?Don’t you people see beyond the end of your nose? No matter who the pick, there would have been problems with the media digging and spinning.

Hussain’s daughter pregnant? Well he “wouldn’t punish her with no baby”. In our middle size HS, there are 11 pregnancies and this is an all white HS. The rats only approve and encourage
homo marriage.

I’m asking whether I would intentionally put my daughter through this sort of national attention by agreeing to run for VP. I hope I wouldn’t, but I’m obviously not as driven as Palin.

I don't think it has anything to do with being "driven". I have relatives up there, and people in their community already knew. Running for VP isn't going to affect the daughter's interactions with her friends, who already adjusted to this news. A teenager, at least from what I've seen with sixty of them in my classes plus my own children, cares about her circle of friends and isn't likely to give Wolfe Blitzer more thought than it takes for an eye roll before moving on to her homework and other important things - which of her friends is going out with whom and whether she can find a homecoming dress that she likes that will fit well.

This also tells us that if the daughter of a social conservative can come out as being pregnant before marriage, even if she is getting married, there’s no longer any shame whatsoever to this. It tells me a lot more than if this had been the daughter of a liberal.

This has been happening with conservatives for centuries, including with a few in my own ancestery (either that or some healthy babies were born as much as six months premature, just twelve weeks after one wedding). The family is supporting their daughter, which is the right thing. They are keeping the baby, which is the right thing. The two loved each other enough to make a baby, and now they are getting married so their child will have an intact family. In most cases, I believe that is the right thing too.

Nonetheless, I wish nothing than the absolute best to Bristol and her future family.

That's one thing we agree on. Personally, I think her children will be strong enough to handle Washington DC without being drawn into the city's problems.

My wonderful, loving Christian grandmother was pregnant when she married my grandfather. That was in the early 1920’s. They were poor, very poor, but made it through, regardless of what anyone else thought.
