Palin Asked About Censoring Books With Wasilla Librarian

WASILLA -- Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn’t fully support her and had to go.

Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job....

“I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, ’The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.’”

I am a librarian. I also resists censoring books, but, this person is lying to themselves if they think they do no censoring. All Librarian censor items. We hold on to items long past their useful lives and discard items that are practically brand new, based on our own judgment. We buy items based on our judgment, not, by rolling dice. By doing that, we censor one idea over another.

This person is of questionable use for a library of any size.

I’m eagerly awaiting an accounting of Obama’s activities in 1996.

Libraries can “claim” they don’t have the budget to buy books by conservative authors but when donated books are discarded at library “book sales” without any shelving, it is an “editorial” decision by library staff not to include such materials in the public library.

This is so much more important than Obama’s terrorist connections, both foreign and domestic, or Biden’s son and bother’s pending criminal charges.

Much more important than the illegal campaign contributions to Obama from middle eastern terrorist connections.

As much as this upsets me, and at the risk of being flamed, I have to say that if the Bush Administration hadn’t given Clinton and every other Dem a pass on all their BS from the past 2 terms, the Dems would think twice about pulling this crap.

Not only are the attacks stupid, but nothing more than preaching to the choir. The fear mongering they’re doing isn’t going to appeal to independents or republicans. It appeals ONLY to the far left kooks. And they’ve already GOT those!

Pinell-Stephens also had no record of any phone conversations with Emmons about the issue back then. No records because this probably never happened. Pinell-Stephens would have remembered it even without the records if it had occured. Another wild goose chase instigated by the Democrats.

This bunch in the MSM has shoveled so many horse chestnut loads of lies, half truths and innuendos about Sarah Palin that now, even if Sarah shot the last one of an endangered species and then drowned a litter of teeny zot kitties, no one in the world would believe them, not even on FR where zot kitties are held in high regard.

I love the smell of DU desperation in the morning.

Stevie ... given the bitter case of Palin Derangement Syndrome (PDS) you are afflicted with, last night's speech must have been really painful to watch.

Here's a thought ...

Unlike the liberals who want to silence Conservative talk radio with the Fairness Doctrine. Gov. Palin was enquiring about books in a local library. The Dems want to limit free speech nation-wide.

The problem with a librarian saying she's against censoring books and other materials is that librarians often do censor what is available to the library patrons.

A school librarian I know shelves inappropriate in the back room. A county librarian will order extra books that support her own belief system, and forget to shelf books that disturb her own sensibilities.

Librarians loathe the concept of book censorship unless it is done by themselves. For after all -- librarians do know best.

Of course, NObomba’s PC crowd NEVER tries to censor anything . . . right, Mr. Imus?
