Maureen Dowd: My Fair Veep
The International Herald-Tribune ^ | September 10, 2008 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 09/11/2008 1:33:39 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

WASILLA, Alaska: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the Arctic plain ...

I hope John McCain doesn't throw his slippers at Sarah Palin's head or get as acerbic as Henry Higgins did with Eliza Doolittle when she did not learn quickly enough. McCain's Pygmalion has to be careful, because his Galatea might be armed with more than a sharp tongue.

For the first time in American history, we have a "My Fair Lady" moment, as teams of experts bustle around the most famous woman in politics, intensely coaching her for her big moment at the ball - her first unscripted interview this week here with ABC's Charlie Gibson.

Eliza, by George, got it and brought off the coup of passing herself off as a Hungarian princess rather than a Covent Garden flower seller. Sarah's challenge is far tougher, and that's why she's pulling the political equivalent of an all-nighter. She doesn't have to pass herself off as a different class or change her voice or be more highfalutin. The McCain campaign is reveling in its anti-intellectual tenor.

Sarah, who is now so renowned that she is known merely by one name and has a name ID of 90 percent, has to be a Kmart mom who appeals to Kmart moms and dads. She's already shown that she can shoot the pig, bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Now all she has to do is prove that she can be the leader of the free world on a moment's notice, and field dress Vladimir Putin as adeptly as she can a moose.

Face it, Maureen, she’s more beautiful than you are ... both inside and out.

Oh man, you are so right . . . The more they write, the more we like...

I noticed I have been using the word vile about five times more than usual this week and here is why. The gift that just keeps on giving. Maureen Dowd also oozes with incredible jealousy and envy in this article.

Even skanked out Reillie Hunter, nee Druck, who has been plowed more than a 1801 Ohio corn field, managed to hook up Edwards in a mid-town bar.

Not MODO. She'll just have to keep paying those Dominicans boys to do the dirty deed.

Puh-leeze! Govenor Palin did not rise to become governor of Alaska by being a shrinking violet, especially in that nest of corrupt GOP politics.

I see this piece is datelined WASILLA, Alaska.

If Maureen Dowd stirred her butt off that Upper West Side barstool long enough to get to Wasilla, Alaska, I will eat my hat.

From article: we have a "My Fair Lady" moment, as teams of experts bustle around the most famous woman in politics, intensely coaching her for her big moment at the ball - her first unscripted interview this week here with ABC's Charlie Gibson.

Maureen Dowd does not know this for fact. But, what I do know about the words Ms. Dowd has written? She is playing with paper dolls, creating scripts which suit her fancy.

Doesn't she have better things to do? Realer issues to cover? Perhaps her next article can be her paper-doll script about the entire fashion line she's created for her "Sarah" to wear.

MD and Sally Quinn, and Peggy Noonan....You know, they’re right, more of these female writers are against Palin than men...

OK, while I grew up in the cold north (NY) I have lived in the South since 1973. [ grace of God ] So I have a question for you true northerly FReepers.

Why does that jacket have eyelets for laces on the front?

Is that jacket really only an under-jacket for something much warmer?

And those gloves look like ‘dress up’ gloves to me.

Not that I mind at all, but it looks like Vogue dressed her to look good (easy to do) as opposed to snapping her pic in real cold weather garb.

I am ready to be informed.

It's only fitting the beautiful, sexy and smart wife of the man who just happens to have dumped Maureen would be perfect to play the role of Palin in the Movie.

Oh yeah :)

Ms. Dowd,

Would you rather trust Governor Palin or Senator Obama in a head-to-head confrontation with Vladimir Putin?

My own guess is that you, like most cognitively unchallenged people, would choose Governor Palin. She clearly has the character; knowledge and experience can be gained, but character is innate.

Would she pray over her decisions, as you mock her for in your article? Indeed, she would, and I think that any serious person would. Certainly neither FDR nor Churchill shrank from public religious expression when our countries faced their greatest crises.
