Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I’m glad that he stayed put and didn’t try to get closer to the stronger winds! Anxious to read his next update.

Nother topic..Shep Smith just said 90,000 still on Galveston Island!

Hmm. The entire population of the island is less than 60,000.

The wind is our concern (that and the power going out.) So far we have not gotten any rain. We are staying safe. Thanks!

I live in Washington state and my girlfriend lives in Baytown, TX; right to the east of the Galveston Bay area. Her house is about 22’ above sea level. She was told to evacuate on Wednesday and is now at a friend's condo in the Houston Galleria area

Speaking of showers (I just had one) we used to fill the bathtub with water to flush the toilet with during a storm. Do the city water pumps go out when the electricity goes off, or was that because we had our own water pump?

We lost power for about 15 minutes. I expect as the night goes on, we will lose it again and it will not come back on for quite a while.

haha I think you have a point. I just don't know that it's going to be "worse."

But come to think of it, there's so many people left on the island, it could be in terms of deaths. shudder

Good for us on the far eastern side. Looks like they have taken West Tenn. out of the sustained winds area.

Trust me, tape on windows does not necessarily keep them from shattering

Maybe not, but it gave us kids something to do.

SW coast of Louisiana is getting it, too.
Terrebonne? 10,000 ordered to evac.
This is likely a monster that’ll be
one for the books. Terrifying.

This doesn’t sound credible, but Shep
said 90,000 in the evac zones of TX
have NOT evacuated? Could it be ?

Lord, have mercy on these people.
