Gibson-Palin: Ratings Hot Despite His Chilly Start
Washington Post ^ | Saturday, September 13, 2008 | Tom Shales

For ABC anchor Charlie Gibson, it was almost a no-win situation, yet he came out of it not losing. Gibson's interviews with Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- who had been carefully sheltered from the media previously -- would have been criticized if he'd seemed too gentle, and yet attacked from other quarters if he'd seemed too tough. So he tried to be both and neither -- a very iffy trick.

Usually likable and personable on-screen, Gibson seemed uncharacteristically pompous during part of the first interview, excerpts from which aired on "ABC World News" on Thursday. But in subsequent sessions with Palin, he was his old chummy self.

Regardless of how one feels about Gibson's technique, he definitely scored a hit in the ratings. "NBC Nightly News" with Brian Williams usually wins the three-network evening news race, but Thursday, ABC's newscast beat NBC's by more than 2 million viewers (9.73 million to 7.5 million, with CBS trailing at 6.1 million), according to quickie Nielsen numbers.

Actually, Gibson did lose. He lost the respect from many women out there: Republicans, independents, and Democrats alike. Every single person who writes about the cross-examination, uh, I mean interview, notices his condescending demeanor. If these ‘journalists’ noticed his awkward body gesture, one would expect million of women (and men too) at home would take notice of that as well.

he [Gibson] definitely scored a hit in the ratings.

I wonder if Sarah Palin had something to do with it...

May I go beyond unconscionable and unfair? Charlie lied, and when given an opportunity to correct his premise within the question, he lied again. He said exactly. Words have meaning. And Charlie is a liar. Not a good resume builder.

So Tom Shales does not read the DC Post either? If he did, he would have read Dr. Krauthammer and know that Gibson committed a gaffe with his Bush Doctrine question and showed his own ignorance.

It was a debate, not an interview.

AFter the interview, I consider Gibson a major WANKER, to borrow from the Old English.

Hope he can keep his teeth to old age...

Likely to be the last hit he’ll ever score.

Even Chris Wallace told the Friends this morning that he thought Charlie was doing the principal scolds the student routine...looking down on her with condescension.

I didn’t know who he was and after watching the interviews I hope I never see or hear of the jerk again.

Anyone that won’t accept an answer and continually tries to reward the question to get an answer they want is a total a**hole!

That was quite the scow Charlie had for the bulk of the interview.

He needed it to haul his garbage.

Very well put. This was the very FIRST time I ever watched Gibson, and obviously, it will be my last.

What a condescending jackass. But now I support the McPalin ticket even more, as I’m sure is the case with most of us here.

-"No Palin’s rating were red hot. "

Absolutely. PALIN'S the DRAW - not 'Charlie'.

Sarah's a HOT DRAW right now. Hannity's ratings are gonna GO THRU THE ROOF next Tuesday. She's a STEAMROLLER!

No way Hitlery is gonna get in Sarah'sr line-of-fire now. Sarah's the most popular woman in American right now.

"Watch out, NOBAMA. Your Nightmare is just beginning!"
