BREAKING: McCain Shifts His Position on Stem Cells?
Catholic Online ^ | 9/17/08 | Deal W. Hudson

There has been some evidence during the campaign that McCain position on embryonic stem cell research was softening. I was skeptical of drawing any conclusions having discussed it with McCain several times. But now the more optimistic prediction has come to pass

We have Sen. Sam Brownback to thank for this, I am sure.

In response to a questionnaire submitted by ScienceDebat2008, the McCain campaign indicated a McCain administration would continue the present limitations on research instituted by President Bush and would seek to outlaw somatic cell transfer completely.

The scientists quoted in the article are not too happy with McCain's apparent shift on the issue.

And Sarah supports it in a case where it jeopardizes the life of the mother...which is logical.

Logical for people who are not 100 percent pro-life which apparently you are not. For me, it is illogical to kill a baby for any reason. I don't fault you for your beliefs, please do not fault me for mine. We just disagree on this one fact.

“This is on his website, too!”

Yes, it is! And “fetal heart beats by 21st day” alerted me to this a couple of days ago, and here it is:

“Addressing the Moral Concerns of Advanced Technology

Stem cell research offers tremendous hope for those suffering from a variety of deadly diseases - hope for both cures and life-extending treatments. However, the compassion to relieve suffering and to cure deadly disease cannot erode moral and ethical principles.

For this reason, John McCain opposes the intentional creation of human embryos for research purposes. To that end, Senator McCain voted to ban the practice of “fetal farming,” making it a federal crime for researchers to use cells or fetal tissue from an embryo created for research purposes. Furthermore, he voted to ban attempts to use or obtain human cells gestated in animals. Finally, John McCain strongly opposes human cloning and voted to ban the practice, and any related experimentation, under federal law.

As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos.

Where federal funds are used for stem cell research, Senator McCain believes clear lines should be drawn that reflect a refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles for the sake of scientific progress, and that any such research should be subject to strict federal guidelines.”

If McCain has clarified that he does support stem cell research on embryos not specifically created for research, or on any embryos at all, I am once again OFF AGAIN on voting this election.

The real value of what Bush allowed for already established embryonic stem cell lines (while forbidding taxpayer dollars going to generate new embryonic stem cell lines) is being realized. How cells transition from totipotent to pluripotent to multipotent has been studied and is now being exploited to 'back up' adult cells to a previous stage of multipotency--stem cell from which many different cell/tissue lines are generated.

It may be superfluous now, but here's a link to layman's booklet free for downloading in html or PDF which gives more information of what stem cells and cloning are.

We can only hope that this is true and not some sort of Romneyesque “epiphany”.

“Bush allowed for already established embryonic stem cell lines “

That troubled me, though, because what IF they discovered there WERE treatments from ESC - it would encourage Frankenscientists to experiment on embryos more.
