Is there a difference between breaking into someone's house when they have a cheap lock vs breaking into someone's house when they have an elaborate security system?

Only in the level of sophistication. In any case, I was just wondering what the precise definition of 'hacking' was.

Saw that. I hope they nail the reponsible parties to the walls. And if the trail leads to an obama operative, so much the better. These thugs belong in prison (but if the Dems had their way, cons would be voting)

Not going to matter at all. Chuck Schumer’s aide hacked into Michael Steele’s credit card account and other personal information with no consequences at all.

I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to gain access to someone’s private email account without their consent and post the contents, cell phone numbers, etc., regardless of the means you employed.

Of course! It's a felony to do so. I wasn't trying to minimize what that scum did. I was just asking if it technically fell under the definition of 'hacking'. I don't know all that much about computers and was just wondering.

That's what I was thinking. This was not a "hack", apparently. Her password was probably something like trig123 and someone figured it out.

That's a hack. From the yahoo terms of service.

Section K
intentionally or unintentionally violate any applicable local, state, national or international law, including, but not limited to, regulations promulgated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, any rules of any national or other securities exchange, including, without limitation, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ, and any regulations having the force of law;

Violation of the terms of service plus a federal felony. I'd say their gonna get hacked off when the perps realize just how much trouble they are in.

At Michelle Malkins’ site, I believe they’ve named the Yahoo! user who has been found to have done the “hacking” - and as far as I’m concerned, the owner of the “Gawker” site should be prosecuted right along with him/her — it’s called “receiving stolen property” in my book. What did that one guy get for hacking into emails — 5 years in prison?

Thanks. I'll check it out and post a link, if someone doesn't beat me to it. :)

Given the Obama campaign’s constant use of thugs to silence criticism this really comes as no surprise.

I said yesterday that Obama, moveon, kos, etc. had a hand in this.

Uh oh, they violated the Terms of Service! Anyway, to be clear, what you posted says it violates applicable law, which may be no law at all. we'll see.

I think you and I are the only ones who read that comment.

Appears to be the same person that was in MM’s blog this morning. In the box under her comments he explained the whole mess.

Was her password guessed or was a password hacking program used?

I believe how this was accomplished is they started a password reset process where it asks various questions, usually general in nature that a wiki search would have answered. Her DOB, her wedding date or whatnot. I think they figured it out based on that. The questions SHOULD be free form. Like, you type in the challenge question and the answer so that you can ask any question that nobody would know but you would.

like: “What kind of medicine is my dog on?”
A: cystolamine

Who the heck would know that?

I hate to see people wasting time on things like this, not because it doesn’t lead somewhere but because the mainstream news media will insure that it meets a dead end. That is, except insofar as they can turn it into an attack on Palin, which they have, and will. Then, the issue will vanish, just like all the other questions about Obama’s birth certificate or finances or associates.

I am sure with computer tracing now and security cameras they have traced the computer and time it happened and already reviewed the security cameras and know who did it.

Not sure about cameras but the logfiles from the proxy service will be the key.

It has been reported that the hackers used ctunnel.com, the browsing proxy service used by the group that hacked into the vice presidential candidate’s personal email account.

It is also reported that the owner of ctunnel.com Gabriel Ramuglia said, “Usually, this sort of thing would be hard to track down because it’s Yahoo email, and a lot of people use my service for that. But since they were dumb enough to post a full screenshot..."

Ramuglia also stated he would “probably” comply with requests from law enforcement but has not yet been contacted.

>>>I think you and I are the only ones who read that comment.

I noted that also. They traced it to the Ctunnel’s server location in Chicago.

Server Data
IP Address: 74.63.75.133 [Whois] [Reverse-Ip] [Ping] [DNS Lookup] [Traceroute]
IP Location United States - Illinois - Woodstock - Fdcservers.net
Response Code: 200
SSL Cert: www.ctunnel.com expires in 535 days.
Domain Status: Registered And Active Website

Funny thing...the about-wiki for Ctunnel has the listed address as Fairbanks Alaska. I know it doesn’t mean anything, but that’s just weird.

Not everyone is mad. Some Dem think there might be probable cause to see if she is really using personal email for state business ( covering up troopergate).

These are the same people who scream about Bush listening in on probable terrorist conversations.
