Gannett owned website. Headline and link only. Will look for another postable source. The article says the fire chief estimates the crowd today at Palin's rally at 70,000.

Well, if its the same Joan Watterson, you can look up their site.
Pretty kooky. No wonder she said Palin is a woman hater.:)

John Q Public sees the MSM for what it is.
No wonder Rush calls them the drive-by media.
Polls overwhelmingly show that the public think the MSM are biased liberally and they ignore it.
There is a silent majority on our side that is not going to put up with it this time IMO.
2000 and 2004 were examples but think 2008 is going to blow both those elections away in our favor.

You need to understand those were the tickets handed out by County Campaign headquarters... not the tickets given per E-mail attachment. For instance, our family of 13 (11 adopted children)traveled over 2 hours to try to have the children learn to be involved as citizens with tickets requated per attachment. The landing was completely filled so most (even those with tickets) stayed outside as overflow crowd watching screens. I truly beleive over 70,000 attended. I also witnessed those of the ‘Country 1st’ crowd were overcome by heat. But, all-in-all it was quite a hostoric event... probably not to be reported accurately by mail-line-media

And it IS possible to verify the size of the crowd if there are reasonable photos and film footage. You can certainly get a sanity check to give a close estimate using a few simple tools.

I would think today's high-resolution cameras and computer technology would make it pretty easy to estimate crowds pretty accurately using automated shape recognition. First have the computer scan a photo and mark each person-like object it finds with a dot. Then pick 100 dots at random and determine how many are not individual people and how many individual people were not identified as dots. If the dots were chosen at random, that should give a pretty good clue as to the actual number of people.

"parking was crazy."

OMG! Was it EVER! I didn't try to get there before 3:00 because I had seen the local TV channel here in Orlando early on filming the long line of people - (some of whom had been camping out there since around 1AM so that they would be first to get in) - and knew that there was no way that I could get anywhere near the stage.

When I got there, I had to park in the grass in the median along with hundreds of other cars between a golf-cart road and Morse Blvd - over a mile away. There was NO parking left anywhere else, and the police had the road blocked - not allowing any more traffic in.

There was a bi-plane flying in circles over the site carrying a banner that said, "The South is Palin Country".

As I started walking toward the rally site, I encountered other people heading back out because they said they had already been standing in line for hours and finally gave up hope of getting in. One guy gave me the two tickets he had, and advised me to try and wave down someone in a golf-cart and offer them 5 bucks to give me a ride into the village. He said, "you have over a mile yet to walk." I didn't take his advice, and finally made it in there just as Sarah's bus was arriving with the law-enforcement escorts about 10 minutes before she was scheduled to speak (at 4:30).

It was wall to wall people and they used the same sort of crowd-control fencing as they do at Disney. Luckily, I was able to at least get up to the fence that separated the early arrivers from the rest of us peons. :) They had big screens up everywhere and lots of loud speakers, so we didn't miss anything. The crowd was really going wild over a lot of what she was saying - the excitement was electric. I'm really glad I went, even though I didn't get a chance to get close enough to shake her hand or get an autograph. No doubt I'll get another chance when she comes back here - maybe to Orlando!!

I had to take my shoes off and walk in the grass as I headed back to my car, as my blisters had blisters by that time. :) I lucked out though, when some sympathetic soul came along in a golf cart and asked me if she could give me a ride to my car. I couldn't get in that cart fast enough! :) We were both surprised how far we had to go to get me to my car - I had no idea that I had walked that far!! If she hadn't given me a ride, I would no doubt still be walking.

The Villages is about an hours' drive for me from where I live in the Orlando area, and after getting home about 8:00 and winding down a bit, I sat down here at my computer with both feet up on a chair beside me to file my report before I fall asleep. With all that sun and walking today, I am so tired right now I can barely stop yawning.:)

Thanks to Starwise for the report and all the great pictures! And thanks to the others who were there for their reports. I doubt if we'd have ever been able to find each other in that crowd even if we had tried.

Here’s the bottom line.
Yes, she doesn’t have a lot of foreign policy experience.
Yes, she isn’t a previous CEO of a company.
Yes, she didn’t graduate from an ivy league school.

But,
Yes, she has a swath of conservative principles and views that appeal to a base that felt left out.
Yes, she has a unique family and local executive history that enables her to understand the basics of leadership to produce positive results that can expand on a national level, which appeals to the local voter.
Yes, she could create a great desire of those that desire her to succeed, like helping a sister or fellow citizen.
Palin has energized so many people, including my wife, like never before.
Her contribution is on ideas of where we want to be, similar to the mantra of Obamaa. If the Left want to crucify her because of that, then they are in hypocritical dire straits.
This campaign is about the presidency, and renewed leadership in congress. Palin is a reminder to McCain that the Conservative Cause is still worthwhile to consider when etablishing policy.

Thanks for your report. I don’t think I could have walked that far. In fact I know I couldn’t. Stay off your feet for a couple of days. :-)

Shoot, I don’t even know where to find CBS. It’s been that long. Oh, there it is. __________________________________ LOL, same thing happened to me recently. I forget now what was on that I wanted to see but I didn't know which channels were NBC, CBS or ABC. I never watch network tv and don't even keep the weekly tv guide so had to flip the first 7 channels of my cable until NBC program appeared.

Now I understand her stupid views and why she would hate Sarah and thinks that Sarah hates women (whever does she get that idea?).

"Big deal, BHO drew 200,000 in Berlin. Oh, wait, Sarah’s crowd are actual voters. "

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if 200,000 (or more) absentee ballots from Berlin showed up in FL in the next few weeks.

Obama “likes to point the finger of blame,” she said, “but has he ever lifted a finger to help?”

“No!,” the crowd yelled back.

LOL!! SP gets the Teleprompter Kid where it hurts.

Re your tagline, “It’s Wasilla, NOT Wasilia, Wassala or Wasalia.”

Did you hear Obama call it “Wasilly”? It was during one of his first one-on-one sit-downs with an interviewer after Sarah Palin’s first appearance. A*shole. He knew exactly what he was saying in an attempt to belittle her and her town.

I would think today's high-resolution cameras and computer technology would make it pretty easy to estimate crowds pretty accurately using automated shape recognition.

It can be done even easier than that.

I use Google Earth's "ruler" tool to measure the actual area the crowd occupies based on what I can determine from looking at the crowd photos. You can then apply a a divider of about 3 or 4 (square feet) per person, based on the perceived crowd density, to determine a good rough estimate of the crowd size.

On that basis, the (70,000 claimed) crowd at Obama's Portland rock concert was only about 26,000, his crowd in Berlin was around 50,000.

Had they actually had 70,000 in the enclosed area in Portland there would have likely been multiple deaths from crushing.

Crowd organizers routinely inflate their figures.

One of the most outrageous is the Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix which claims 400,000 attendees each year.

The truth is that about 20,000 attended last year. I photographed the crowd along the entire route to get an accurate count.

To get their claimed 400,000 they would have to have a crowd that was shoulder to shoulder and 45 rows deep along both sides of the entire route! The truth was it averaged two to three rows deep in lawn chairs and with large gaps in places.

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena is equally inflated. they claim a MILLION spectators!

That would require about 34 rows of shoulder to shoulder spectators along the entire route, which clearly is not the case.
