ABC News: Deal May Be Dead: Democrats Blaming McCain
ABC News ^ | September 25, 2008 | Jake Tapper, Charles Herman and Z. Byron Wolf

After days of intense bipartisan negotiations and meetings today at the White House, the deal to bail out staggered investment banks may be dying amid partisan finger-pointing.

Republicans blame Democrats. Democrats blame Republicans, and a key Democrat even pointed a finger at Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., told Democratic colleagues that McCain's sudden heightened involvement in the negotiations has destroyed chance of an agreement, sources told ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

Frank compared McCain's involvement to "Richard Nixon blowing up the Vietnam peace talks in 1968."

The folks that I have talked to "on the street" all say that they would rather suffer a depression than bail out the investment banks.

I'm smiling with pride after that comment.

I've heard on Fox that the GOP is being held to account by their constiuents, saying that we don't want socialism to take hold because of this financial mess.

WELL WHAT DO YOU KNOW, THEY ACTUALLY LISTEN! Now let's see if they will do as their "constiuents" demand or if they bring more socialism to American against our will.

And I agree, let the depression come. Don't bail out these banks, if they are bailed out then the American government is rewarding stupidity and demoratic skulldugery.

Little Lindsey was just on with Greta and said that McCain is in D.C. working the phones...Barry is probably shooting hoops or reclining in his hotel room with a cocktail. He also said that they’d probably debate tomorrow night but it didn’t matter because they’ve been trying to get Barry to debate for months—practically kidnapped him to get him to debate.

So I’m half asleep listening to Greta..and Lindsey Graham comes on...talks about the bill- where they are and aren’t...I’m drifing..his tone gets a little angrier- and then he says TWENTY PER CENT of the budget for implementing? carrying mortgages? of where this money would go is:

ACORN.

YES, ACORN.

THAT ACORN.

Did anyone else hear prescisely what 20 % he was refering to?

Thanks.

I've been round and round this issue with the pro-bailout crowd on FR all week.

It occurred to me in a flash tonight that my real problem with them is that they don't want to tell the public the truth..

If this is true that McCain helped stop this bill, then he has finally earned my vote for President.

Actually, the best compromise is to allow these idiot institutions to fail along with their idiot loan borrowers.

Speaking of Biden...where has he been today? Why isn’t he in Washington showing the world what a great leader he would be? Maybe he is there, but I haven’t heard him mentioned at all.

Countrywide Financial Joins Forces With ACORN
Monday, February 11, 2008

PAUL KANGAS: Tomorrow Countrywide Financial will join other lenders and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to announce a new foreclosure prevention program. Today Countrywide struck a deal with community group Acorn that also helps troubled borrowers avoid foreclosure. Instead of just modifying loans for sub-prime borrowers with adjustable interest rates, this agreement helps homeowners with delinquent and fixed rate home mortgages. Stephanie Dhue reports.

He recently broke up with Herb Moses, whom he referred to as his “lover,” after a relationship of more than 10 years. The two are still friends.

While the relationship reportedly ended 10 years ago, ((Barney)) Frank was serving on the House Banking Committee the entire 10 years they were together. The committee is the primary House body which along with the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) has jurisdiction over the government-sponsored enterprises.

He has served on the committee since becoming a congressman in 1981 and became the ranking Democrat on the committee in 2003. He became chairman of the committee, now called the House Financial Services Committee, in 2007.

((Herb)) Moses was the assistant director for product initiatives at Fannie Mae and had been at the forefront of relaxing lending restrictions at the company for rural customers, according to the Feb. 23, 1998, issue of National Mortgage News (NMN).

“Herb Moses, who helped develop many of Fannie Mae’s affordable housing and home improvement lending programs, has left the mortgage industry,” Darryl Hicks wrote for NMN.

“Mr. Moses - whose last day was Feb. 13 - spent the past seven years at Fannie Mae, most recently as director of housing initiatives. Over the course of time, he played an instrumental role in developing the company’s Title One and 203(k) home improvement lending programs.”

You know, you are right during MSM normal times. Unfortunately, anything that McCain does during this cycle will be portrayed as political and he will come out on the far end of the debate.

Realistically, I agree with you though....
