How can the President of the United States be denied a basic security clearance? How can the Commander and Chief of the most powerful military be denied access to classified information? Barack Obama would be denied the necessary security clearance for President if he was held to the same standard as everyone else.

From what I understand, being POTUS is all you need to get clearance. You are CINC, nothing to qualify for. Your position itself gives you full authority.

Interesting. a soldier can have a felony on his record not related to drugs and still get a secret security clearance. Obama must have done something really wrong to not get one. I mean, I had a top secret, SBI TK-1 while in the Army. But then again, I didn’t have any arrest record and was an all American Kid

“If you cant pass a Secret level background investigation, which is required for many soldiers, you should not be eligible for the Presidency.”
I’d support a constitutional amendment to that effect. But for now, it’s not a requirement.

Heard an interview from an FBI or DOD representative once. Elected officials are rarely screened for security clearance. There is no Constitutional requirement for it and the FBI's position, rightfully so, is that they cannot stand in the way of the people's choice.
Unfortunately it is up to the press to help the people vet those that run for elected office but that rarely goes both ways, as recent events have shown.

Was he actually denied or do you think he would be denied?
As far as drugs, lots of people who have done drugs have received security clearance, even top secret clearances. As long as someone is truthful about what they have done in the past, and they are no longer doing drugs, then they can usually get a clearance.
Other issues can hamper a person getting a clearance. If someone is having an affair, and they are actively lying about it to a spouse. This sets them up for blackmail.
Also, financial problems such as going bankrupt because that sets someone up for maybe wanting to sell secrets.

Your position itself gives you full authority. You are correct. This same thing was bantered about in the Clinton election and there is nothing to it. Sounds good, but is nothing but a rumor.

Obama could not qualify for any security clearance if he had to go through the door like everyone else. I want to know why every candidate for President does not have to have a background check like they require for Top Secret. Let each candidate fill out the form that some of us had to fill out every five years to keep the clearance. If they cannot pass it, then they cannot run for office.
Remember the woman Schroeder (I Think) from CO who whined she was on Armed Services but she was not allowed to hear the black box briefings but expected to vote on the money. Good reason is that she never had the security clearance because there are certain briefings only members with the clearance can hear.

When the people elect a President the clearance is a non issue period.
No clerk or bureaucrat can tell the nation that the President elect doesn’t pass his departments security requirements.
