How can the President of the United States be denied a basic security clearance? How can the Commander and Chief of the most powerful military be denied access to classified information? Barack Obama would be denied the necessary security clearance for President if he was held to the same standard as everyone else.

From what I understand, being POTUS is all you need to get clearance. You are CINC, nothing to qualify for. Your position itself gives you full authority.

Interesting. a soldier can have a felony on his record not related to drugs and still get a secret security clearance. Obama must have done something really wrong to not get one. I mean, I had a top secret, SBI TK-1 while in the Army. But then again, I didn’t have any arrest record and was an all American Kid

“If you can’t pass a Secret level background investigation, which is required for many soldiers, you should not be eligible for the Presidency.”

I’d support a constitutional amendment to that effect. But for now, it’s not a requirement.

Heard an interview from an FBI or DOD representative once. Elected officials are rarely screened for security clearance. There is no Constitutional requirement for it and the FBI's position, rightfully so, is that they cannot stand in the way of the people's choice.

Unfortunately it is up to the press to help the people vet those that run for elected office but that rarely goes both ways, as recent events have shown.

Was he actually denied or do you think he would be denied?

As far as drugs, lots of people who have done drugs have received security clearance, even top secret clearances. As long as someone is truthful about what they have done in the past, and they are no longer doing drugs, then they can usually get a clearance.

Other issues can hamper a person getting a clearance. If someone is having an affair, and they are actively lying about it to a spouse. This sets them up for blackmail.

Also, financial problems such as going bankrupt because that sets someone up for maybe wanting to sell secrets.

You are correct. This same thing was bantered about in the Clinton election and there is nothing to it. Sounds good, but is nothing but a rumor.

Obama could not qualify for any security clearance if he had to go through the door like everyone else. I want to know why every candidate for President does not have to have a background check like they require for Top Secret. Let each candidate fill out the form that some of us had to fill out every five years to keep the clearance. If they cannot pass it, then they cannot run for office.

Remember the woman Schroeder (I Think) from CO who whined she was on Armed Services but she was not allowed to hear the black box briefings but expected to vote on the money. Good reason is that she never had the security clearance because there are certain briefings only members with the clearance can hear.

When the people elect a President the clearance is a non issue period.

No clerk or bureaucrat can tell the nation that the President elect doesn’t pass his departments security requirements.

Because all government agencies are inherently political, this would be used by those in power to deny their opponents candidates that they did not want to run against a security clearance, just like Clinton sicking the IRS on all his political enemies.

This looks like a hypothetical exercise, i.e. what would happen IF Obama tried for a security clearance? From the article:

“Instead of going through all the Security Clearance Application questions, I’ll examine the questions that would deny Barack Obama a Secret Clearance.”

cannot stand in the way of the people's choice.

If a majority number of voters elect someone to public office (despite their history, political stance or general proclivities that might offend the minority voters) … the people have spoken and nothing can stand in the way (constitutionally). ;-)

You don’t need security clearance if you are president and wish to take away the security of our nation. See how long it takes him to downsize our military. There will be no security. You will have no way to protect yourself either because first he will take your guns away, then he will take our military away.

I admitted to my trying marijuana when I was 20 years old (and yes, I told them that I inhaled), and I told them about my being busted as a drug importer (later cleared, correctly) while I was in the military, and I still received my C6, and then my T1 from DHS/ICE.

Besides, that would have little to do with his security clearance. Would take a majority of votes to accomplish the ouster after impeachment… Clinton survived. Get this snot in office and only political bomb would get him out.

I want to know why every candidate for President does not have to have a background check like they require for Top Secret.

The requirements for President are defined by the Constitution: Age 35 or more, natural born US citizen; that's it.

Security clearances are agency requirements and cannot supersede the Constitution. It's up to the voters not to elect a Marxist to office, unless that's their choice.

That’s a different issue. The power to impeach the President is again a Constitutional authority. Congress cannot prevent an elected President from taking office nor can they preempt his candidacy.

Congressmen and women do not get a security clearance, yet we have had many Communists posing as members of the Democratic Party since the 1930’s, as well as one Democrat (Dickstein) who was a made Soviet agent in the 1930’s.

Other CPUSA members and/or covert members or well documented supporters include:
Bella Abzug - one day her Party membership will be made public if the records are not destroyed
John Conyers, Jr - a record too long to print. Key supporter of the KGB operation known as the WPC. (So did many others). Interested in which communist/socialist group his father belonged to in the UAW. Later bought out by the Reuthers.
Ron Dellums - there wasn’t a communist cause from many communist parties that he didn’t support - CPUSA, SWP, WWP, etc.
Charles Hayes (D-Ill) - id. CPUSA
George Crockett Jr (D-Mich) - id. CPUSA
Vito Marcantonio - CP mouthpiece in Congress(membership not publicly disclosed)
Charles Porter, Don Edwards; Burton Brothers - all well documented CPUSA supporters (Edwards hired CP members in his title insurance company)
Maxine Waters; Rangel; T. Weiss; Frank; Savage; Major Owens; Kastenmeier; Parren Mitchell (from a Party family); and many more - well documented communist front supporters and sometimes CPUSA overt organizations (their newspapers and the annual fundraising banquets, etc).

Also, a number of communists and sympathizers have been hired by these people, including by John Kerry, Conyers, Crockett, etc.

The story about how loyal congressmen have had to use subtrafuge to keep some other communist congressmen from secret materials will never be told. You had to be there to know about it. (been there; done that).

THere is so much more to this topic, but the only conclusion I can give after 40 years in this arena is that our security system is almost totally broken.

Sleep well tonight, if you are a blind fool!

this title is misleading, there's no evidence that Obama was denied a security clearance. The article is speculation on how he could be denied a clearance, based off of some sketchy recountings of his background and record.

Having foreign nationals as family members is not a disqualifier, nor is a past history of experimentation with drugs.

The association with anti-government groups part is a little wild, claiming that Bill Ayers killed hundreds of people. Bill Ayers is a troubling association, and one that warrants more (any) serious debate in the media, but he is not a mass murderer. Sure, it's safe to say that Bill Ayers was a founding member of the Weathermen, and has remained supportive of their causes throughout the years, but does the author of the article seriously believe that somehow Bill Ayers personally killed hundreds of people, including police officers, yet walks free?

personally killed...doubtful. Hundreds, definitely not, Ayers bombings were actually quite amateurish and ineffective. It was his followers that actually succeeded in killing someone.

My actual point is that in all fairness to the author, Ayers' guilt is not in question. He has admitted everything that he has been accused of. Actually lamented that he had not done enough (NYT 09/11/2001). He is on the street because of a technicality.

I’d disagree on the polygraph part...they’re worthless.

Innocent people get nervous and flunk them, while sociopaths can pass them.

Didn’t that Hansen guy who gave the Russians all that material pass multiple polygraphs?
