Obama's grandmother dies of cancer in Hawaii

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."

Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

Prayers for the Obama family, it’s good he saw her when he did.

It would be ridiculous if anyone were to cast a sympathy vote for Obama because of this.

Don't underestimate the breathtaking stupidity of a very substantial percentage of this country's voters.

My theory is that for every sympathy vote, there will be another voter who compensates by NOT casting a sympathy vote.

I refer you to the reply I gave immediately above.

Even she couldn’t stomach the thought of her ungrateful, SOB grandson as the President.

Can he have a televised rally like they did when Wellstone died?

Did this woman ever speak to the press? Her grandson is a mystery to this nation and he said some nasty things about her (and white people in general) during the campaign.

Like those who have said above - let’s keep it respectful. No doubt she lived through some tough times and my prayers go out to this woman. Whether we like Obozo or not, she raised this kid under tough circumstances. Sounds like she was a tough woman.

I am sorry that BO lost his grandmother but just because something sad happened to this guy doesn’t change the fact that he’s no good. i don’t think many people will give the sympathy vote and if they do, they shouldn’t be allowed to vote-PERIOD!

I'm going to hell for saying this, but why did the paper put this in the article:

The statement did not say when Madelyn Dunham died or who was with her. Her 86th birthday was Oct. 26.

Typical white woman.

I'm wondering if factcheck.org is going to publish an obviously Photoshopped death certificate to prove Grandma really died today...

I don’t wish to seem cruel in any way...but I agree with you. My mom and also a dear friend went through this. Who WAS with her when she died??

Absent is exactly WHEN she died. Today? Yesterday? Two days ago? A week?

Since he is the messiah, can’t he raise her from the dead?

Just in time for the evening news cycle.

How many percentage points does this cost us?

By the way, is dry ice or regular old ice better for preserving bodies for about a 2-week period? Just wondering just in case I ever have to do

OK, but people have no connection to his grandmother -- no recent photos, no public appearances, she barely existed.

I was suspicious that he didn't take the rest of the family with him. Wouldn't surprise me if she passed away last week, with the announcement planned for this evening.

RIP -- but BO is not getting my vote.

Trolling on the DU board, ran across a post that said “I’m an
atheist, but I will pray for her. I think it’s the gesture that counts.” Typical DUmmie-think.

I don’t think so. The Wright ads have already run, the coal thing is out there, and he wouldn’t get much coverage emoting on Election Day. That said, it’s remarkably convenient, for whatever he could wring out of it.
