Not the end of the world ( Steven Den Beste )

think Obama is going to turn out to be the worst president since Carter, and for the same reason: good intentions do not guarantee good results. Idealists often stub their toes on the wayward rocks of reality, and fall on their faces. And the world doesn't respond to benign behavior benignly.

But there's another reason why: Obama has been hiding his light under a basket. A lot of people bought a pig in a poke today, and now they're going to find out what they bought. Obama isn't what most of them think he is. The intoxication of the cult will wear off, leaving a monumental hangover.

And four years from now they'll be older and much wiser.

A lot of bad things are going to happen during this term. But I don't think that this is an irreversible catastrophe for the union. I've lived long enough to absorb this basic truth: the US is too large and too strong to destroy in just 4 years. Or even in 8. We survived 6 years of Nixon. We survived 4 years of Carter. We even survived 8 years of Clinton, God alone knows how.

The President of the United States is the most powerful political figure in the world, but as national executives go his powers are actually quite restricted. Obama will become President, but he won't be dictator or king, let alone deity. He still has to work with the House and the Senate, and he still has to live within Constitutional restrictions, and with a judiciary that he mostly didn't appoint.

Hopefully in two years, in time for the mid-term elections.

We survived 6 years of Nixon. We survived 4 years of Carter. We even survived 8 years of Clinton, God alone knows how.

And each one of those survivals chipped away a little more of our core. SOONER [or later] it will break. I think we are seeing it.

That number 4 will likely mean the end of the world. At least if the world ends, we won’t have to put up with any more lies.

Obama has been hiding his light under a basket.

Actually, the "light" has been exposed for a long time. The MSM has chosen to ignore it.

I am not dispirited. I see the possibility of president-elect Obama governing from the center. He said that he's president of all the people.

True that this is not the traditional Democratic Party of FDR, Truman, Scoop Jackson, Hubert Humphrey, et al of pre-1970s America.

It's also true that the leaders and stalwarts of the Party are the 1960s New Left and anarchist street rabble and their ideological issue. Yes, they've always blamed America for all the world's problems but..

and as for Obama himself there is that speech in Germany where he confessed America's sins against the world's peoples and Her sins against the world's environment. But remember?

Obama at the end told that audience in that foreign land proudly (paraphrasing) "But I love the bitch and I'm going to make her a good citizen of the world."

And hey! I remember the "Fairness Doctrine." Wait to hear Top-40 AM 24/7. Lots of great music all the time.

Not the end. Just the beginning. Of the end.

“Really, there is no room for dopes like you anymore..”

That’s about as scary as something Rahm Emanuel might say. Den Beste isn’t a dope. But even if he was, when there’s no room for dopes you have to figure out what to do with the dopes.

This has been done before, by some of history’s bad guys and their blood soaked lackeys.

Then I guess it's time to be even scarier. This isn't a game, pilgrim.

Our country has never recovered from the 1960s and that is what will be hoisted on us soon.

As an example, national health care is beginning (actually it began in the 1960s with Medicare).

He lied, like usual. The thought of Bill Ayers walking around the White House makes me cry.

I took today and yesterday off from work and I went to the bookstore today and I noticed this sweet young thang, no older than 18, wearing a political button. I began to roll my eyes when I noticed it was a McCain button.

So maybe there is hope out there.
