COLUMBIA Gov. Mark Sanford has been charged by the nation's Republican governors to lead their association through the toughest times the GOP party has faced since 1994.
The two-term South Carolina governor was elected by his peers Friday to serve as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, the same day the Washington Post mentioned him as a potential candidate for president in 2012.
In an exclusive interview with The Post and Courier by phone Friday, Sanford did not rule out a run but said that's not where he is focused.
Sanford said the party has a lot of work to do to get ready to take Congress back in 2010 before it can begin to think about its next presidential candidate.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was voted the association's vice chairman. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was named finance chairman and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will serve as recruitment chairman.
"I am honored and excited to become chairman of the Republican Governors Association as we work together to win a majority of Governors by 2010," Sanford said in a statement released by the association. "Republican governors are natural leaders who will find solutions to our nation's challenges and bring back the party."

SC Ping.
I’m just not ready to gear up for 2012, yet.
Palin, Sandford, and Jindal are are good people fo rthe future. We should have SOME combination of them.
“Im just not ready to gear up for 2012, yet.”
2010 is where we set our sights right now I think.
Yes, let’s start the new presidential campaign today.....NOT
I’m tired of it for a while.
He was my first preference for the GOP nominee in 2008 and Palin was my first choice as VP. In retrospect, Sanford was smart to sit out ‘08. He’s our best hope in 2012-should knock NC, VA, and FL back where they belong. We’ll pick up a few EVs with the redistricting in 2010 (Blue states are losing 7-10 EVs to traditionally Red States). 2010 will be ‘94 all over again.
Can he Talk a good game or does he have porky pig syndrome (Stumbles over his own words)?
If Yes to the question, than he is NOT needed...
If No to the question, than he can be looked at
I became interested in this guy when he addressed the SC State Legislature with a suckling pig under each arm.
He allegedly said "I think it's high time you met your daddies!"
It would be a great thing. I like Sanford a lot and could easily support him.
He allegedly said “I think it’s high time you met your daddies!”
LOL!

Enough with that geographical nonsense. That’s one of the reasons we had such lousy candidates in 2008 was the moronic idea that it had to be a non-Southerner. Get over that. Pick the right guy for the job and forget about geography.
He's a great guy and the REAL DEAL!
Time will tell, God help all three of them - and America.
