To: STARWISE
I'm glad you liked it Starwise. Jimi was a true shooting star, going from a virtual unknown in 1967 (after brief stints with Little Richard and The Isley Brothers) to a multinational superstar by his death in September 1970.

When Noel Redding left The Experience in early summer 1969 to form Fat Mattress, Jimi disbanded The Experience. With The Woodstock Music and Arts Fair already booked, he threw together the Gypsy Sun and Rainbow combo with Mitch and was preoccupied recording the studio album "The Cry of Love" at his new Electric Lady Studios in New York. He had run up such an expensive tab of recording studio time all over the world that Warner Brothers built him his own studio.

He still owed Capitol records an album under a prior contract, so on New Year's Eve 1970, he recorded "Band of Gypsys" live at the Filmore with Buddy Miles and old Army buddy Billy Cox on bass.

When Reprise released "The Cry of Love" album Jimi set off on yet another grueling world tour with Billy and Mitch, the fourth in three years. He called that band Cry of Love as well as trying out several other band names. He tried playing new music, but was frustrated by his fans demanding the same old set list. Jimi had plans to change his entire approach after the tour with a project he called The New Rising Sun. He had jammed with Miles Davis and John Coltrane and favored jazz, but was also considering other alternatives including joining Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Certain Black Panthers were also pressuring him to play more ethnic black music and he wanted to explore his Cherokee roots as well. He was extremely conflicted about his direction when he died.

Mitch was very lucky to hitch his wagon to Jimi's train, but despite his talent, he was to be forever known as Jimi's drummer and was playing with yet another Hendrix retrospective review when he passed away last week of natural causes.
