Conservatives thoughts on just being laid off. (I was)

I was laid off this week. Two weeks before Christmas. Am I scared, No, I have no debt and a savings account.

I have been in my trade for 15 years and have excellent skills.

I took and passed my states contractors license a few months ago and passed. Yea me!

I have about 3 years of living expenses in the bank and no debt.

I'm taking a well deserved few months off before the next year and will start my own business come spring. I'll be hunting and fishing in my spare time. Who needs the damn government! Not this family.

Good luck. If you have a contractor’s license, you might consider doing a bit of odd job work here & there while you plan for your business. People in that field tend to get known by word of mouth, I think.

My daughter just got her pink slip notice. Her company shutting down her work location 12/31/08. She’ll get a severance package. She’s been there 10 years.

I was wacked when I was forty. I had a mortgage, car loan, a kid one year away from college and @ $87.00 in the bank.

At fifty I was retired.

You are in much better shape...just be careful and frugal.

Don’t wait too long to get back to work. Lost my job in April and thought I would take some time off. Now I don’t want to even look. May just cut our expenses and live off hubby’s retirement.

Good luck sir. You’ll find something. There are worse places to be laid off than Alabama. Like Ohio or Michigan.

Cobol programming is still a marketable commodity? Who knew? One of the first programming languages I learned. ;-)

Congratualtions. You planned and you have no debt and saved. That’s exactly what to do.

I just saw where COBOL programmers can make up to $120 an hour.

Well, you can, but you have to move to Costa Rican beachfront property, and work with the Nigerian Prime Minister, who has found an unclaimed inheritance of 14,000,000.00 dollars.

Good luck to you. You sound exactly like a striking autoworker I heard on the radio about thirty years ago. Since he wasn't working he decided to take the missus on a holiday cruise for a few weeks. He wasn't relying on the goobermint either--or so he thought.

Yay! Take a well-deserved Sabbatical. It’s a real eye-opener to see how many “things” we can live without. Growing up, we had nothing but each other. No running water, but had a good well, no indoor bathroom, just a house behind the house, no Charmin; used the Sears & Roebuck catalog instead, bathed in a galvanized tub, didn’t think we had to have carry out food every night - didn’t even know what “carry out food” was. - Take care of yourself and your family; the people we love are all we have anyway that are really valuable. Rest up and don’t worry, be happy.

Never burn bridges. Always plan ahead and try to save versus spend. My prayers to those who are having a tough time this year.

At least you did not invest with that crook and mega Dem contributor Bernie Maddoff. A lot of people, probably mostly Dems, with a lot of money are going to go from being very wealthy to being broke overnight due to this evil man.

Prudence and self promotion pays in the long run, always.

I was laid off in late 1960 and could not find a full time job. In Nov 61 while reading the classified ads I saw an ad small shop for rent and as they say “THE REST IS HISTORY”. Our son owns the business today and employs 15 people while paying me rent. I would have never done that if I had not lost my job.

Manage your money wisely and rely on your own instincts for advice...
