Yep, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field images even more spectacularly illustrate just how many galaxies are out there in the universe! By following your link, you can get to a zoomable version of the HUDF image and, no matter how much you zoom in, you just keep seeing more -- and more -- galaxies.

Thanks for the link!

BUMP and I thought this one was really cool.

Chandra X-ray observations revealed the evidence of the turmoil that has wracked the central region of the cluster for hundreds of millions of years. The cluster contains thousands of galaxies immersed in a vast cloud of multimillion degree gas with the mass equivalent of trillions of suns. The enormous bright loops, ripples, and jet-like streaks apparent in the image can be linked to explosive activity generated by gas swirling toward the super-massive black hole (white spot) in the giant central galaxy, NGC 1275. Many of these features extend well beyond the galaxy where they heat the cluster gas and affect the evolution of the cluster. The dark blue filaments near the center are likely due to a galaxy that has been torn apart and is falling inward. Eventually, some of the gas from the doomed galaxy will be captured by the supermassive black hole in NGC 1275, fueling still more explosive activity.

I'm not sure. When I realized I forgot the URL, I sent it to the admin mod via "Report Abuse" for prompt attention.

Pretty off-topic, but there was a story on National Geo TV about the palomar telescope that had some stuff on Hubble (the guy, not the telescope). It was pretty good.

The show after that was about those crystal skulls. They had a bunch of kooks who said the skulls were from Atlantis, Mars, aliens, etc. Then they had a scientist from the Smithsonian who said the skull was carved with modern machinery in the last 100 years, and that there was a reciept showing the “explorer” bought it at an auction at Southby’s. Kind of let the air out of that one.

Leave it to the Daily Snooze to run a story about Hubble images and use a cartoon to promote it. :)

What if I dropped dead? The thread has been linked.

It occurs to me that the people on this thread that have the time to make such silly pokes at you could find a better use of that said same time by going and finding the link all by themselves. But then go figure.......

“Photoshop can be stunning.”

Exactly. Bingo. All that comes back from Hubble is data. 0s and 1s. The artists at NASA assign lots of pretty colors that have little to do with what out there to data patterns.

Glad to see we get pleasing colors for our millions of $$$.
