How long will euphoria over Obama last?

WASHINGTON -- Peter Hart, the veteran and highly respected Democratic pollster, talks almost reverentially about the political benefits that accrue to politicians from an association with Barack Obama. Nearness to the president elect, he says, is worth at least 5 percentage points to any aspiring candidate. It is an illusion of near Messianic proportions, the therapeutic results of a touching of the hem.

Obama himself reinforces this mystical illusion by deciding to travel to his Washington inauguration from Illinois by train, emulating the journey that Abraham Lincoln took to take the oath of office in 1861, expecting huge crowds as he stops along the way to make speeches. Furthermore, he will use a Lincoln Bible for his swearing in.

While this imagery may seem out of place in the often-tawdry world of politics it is becoming more and more commonplace as the soon to be first African-American president rides a wave of popularity of historic proportions into a job that is becoming more difficult each day. More than 70 percent of Americans seem to revere him as they pin their hopes for a rejuvenated economy on his promise of change.

This near adulation with metaphysical overtones, of course, is understandable in light of the sudden world celebrity that Obama brings to the job as the chief executive of a nation often castigated for excluding his race from its legendary freedoms. Excesses of enthusiasm are bound to be a result, especially at a time when the country is seeking leadership out of the foreign and domestic woes of the last eight years.

But how long will this euphoria last? Don't such "great expectations" (with an apology to Charles Dickens) make his task more daunting?

How long will euphoria over Obama last?

What euphoria? Gun sales at the highest levels ever. Unemployment climbing even higher after the election results. Islamofacist sluagheters increasing around the world even after the election results. The economy continue to sinl after the election results.
I would like someone to show me where they see signs of euphoria over Obama being elected as President of the US. Hold up. Except for the Socialists and Terrorists of the world.....

In three months, when the people who voted for him to line their pockets with free housing and free gasoline, and maybe even free cars, the honeymoon will be over and they will call him an Uncle Tom.

The liberals think Obama is wonderful. That he is too good to be true. As has always been that case, if it is too good to be true, it isn’t true.

He’s the Jackie Robinson of politics, except Jackie Robinson was the real deal, arguably the most gifted major leaguer of his era.

That makes two of us. The hardest part for me is going to be the ‘he can do no wrong’ lovefest after eight years of rabid hatred for Bush.

Not very long apparently. My cousin voted for him and is disappointed with the way Zero has handled affairs in the office of the President Elect.

I planted a few seeds of questions about the birth certificate in his head as well. I pointed how how badly damaged the democrats would be if another nation refused to sign a treaty with us till they saw the vault copy. (he wants to make sure republicans never regain another seat)

Or in our case, how long will this sensation of about-to-barf last?

Until 2012, I reckon.

Let’s hope there’s somebody good to work for in 2012.

6 months to a year. Your going to see one of the biggest drops in presidential popularity - ever. Zero’s approval rating will be close to, well - zero.

And I’m going to laugh, and laugh...

Depends on the ultimate outcome.

Euphoria over JFK lasted 40+ years. ‘Course that was largely due to the what I call the “Marilyn Effect” - someone who dies in their prime raised to cult-like status that they never would have achieved had they lived. (Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, JFK, probably Che now) Had JFK lived, he be no more than another in a long list of Presidents and probably more closely linked with Vietnam and other scandals.

Lincoln began his trip to DC in 1861 from Springfield, Illinois, NOT Philadelphia, and had to sneak into the city at night because of fears of assassination.

All Obama is teaching our kids is that old-style thug politics are still in vogue. It’s not what you know, it’s how much your campaign contributions are worth in the way of political influence and muscle.

The only “change” he’ll bring is the location of his pals’ headquarters.

I was actually pleased that "The Euphoria" was over less than 2 weeks after the election. That is when people realized that Obama was on his own, the media did all the work up till then.

Where I come from that means, Put Up or Shut Up time is at hand.

I’ve been thinking about two tag lines.

I’m not a president, but I play one on TV.

I’m not a president, but I stayed at a Hiliday Inn last night. (Like that would ever actually happen.)
