The Mountain West would have to play real teams for a whole season to be considered.
I noted on another thread that Utah looked very good, however it would be interesting to see them play an SEC schedule, and not just a depleted team on the way down at the end of the season.
The writer neither understands the BCS or WWII.
I would like a playoff but it just isn’t practical. To be fair it would have to include all 120 1A teams and that would just be too many games.
Another problem is any top 50, maybe even top 80 team could on any given day beat the best team in the country. Not likely but it does happen. At least the BCS uses the entire season instead of a one loss and you are out system.
First - hard max of 12 games, no conference championship games.
Dec. 25 - four bowls host quarterfinals, e,g., Citrus, Cotton, Orange and Peach Bowls (*).
Jan. 1 - anchor semi-finals: Rose and Sugar Bowls.
Jan. 8 - National Championship Game, Fiesta Bowl (*).
(*) These sites rotate, so over a five-year period, each of these bowls will host a National Championship Game.
I will point out that college bowl games currently string out from about Dec. 25 to about Jan. 8, and that, because of conference championship games, quite a few teams already play 14 games.
To preserve connections with historic bowl games:
Cotton Bowl, when it’s one of the quarterfinal sites, hosts the top-rated Big 12 team if a Big 12 team makes the cut.
Citrus Bowl, when it’s one of the quarterfinal sites, hosts the top-rated Big 10 team if a Big 10 team makes the cut.
Orange Bowl, when it’s one of the quarterfinal sites, hosts the top-rated Big East team if a Big East team make the cut.
Peach Bowl, when it’s one of the quarterfinal sites, hosts the top-rated ACC team if an ACC team makes the cut.
Fiesta Bowl, when it’s one of the quarterfinal sites, hosts the top-rated Mountain West team if a MW teams makes the cut.
Rose Bowl, locks in a Jan. 1st date, and gets the top-rated PAC-10 team, if a PAC-10 team makes the semi’s, along with an opponet that creates an east-west confrontation if that’s possible.
Sugar Bowl, also locks in a Jan. 1st date, and gets the top-rated SEC team, if an SEC team makes the semi’s, along with an opponet that creates a north-south confrontation if that’s possible.

The period from the opening of the quarterfinals to the National Championship Game opens up for a lot of tv opportunities for the lesser bowls; e.g. Gator Bowl, Sun Bowl, etc. Which is also a good thing. This is like having the NIT Tournament while the NCAA National Basketball Championship Tournament is underway.
Finally, I will note that Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st are national holidays. Normally, this means no interference with the NFL. But, even if these dates show up on the weekend, either the colleges or the NFL can adjust, because of these will be three-day weekends.
Selecting 12 teams would be the exact same problem we have now. Number 13 or 14 would always complain. Also 16 would be mathematically the more correct number.

Actually, and seriously for a minute, I’m not for a playoff. Makes the year too long for the kids, increases the risk of injury, impacts kids education, etc.
The computer model is bad. That simple.
In my opinion, they should publish the source code and let everyone take a whack at something more fair.
Utah got jobbed, twice. Boise State schooled Oklahoma the year they were undefeated. Penn State got jobbed one year too going undefeated.
instead of complaining, Utah should be trying to get a tougher schedule. Thats very simple. If USC is complaining they should get a tougher schedule. Sorry man. The only memorable win that Utah had was against Alabama... guess what Florida beat Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, etc. If Utah wants to be considered then move to a tougher conference or tweak their schedule.
Same goes for USC.
People that want a playoff system seem to forget the large amount of teams in NCAAF and the small amount of games in a season. A playoff system will also cause people to neglect bowl games and conference championships. Thats one of the great things about college football.
ANYTEAM can have a good day... It takes skill to consistently win in a conference like the SEC. Many unranked teams in the SEC would be ranked if they played in another conference.
The only team that has an argument about being robbed is Texas. But then again more blame falls on the Big 12 (NOT THE BCS). The bcs is not perfect.. but nothing can be perfect due to the amount of teams and limited season.
And by the way.. I always felt miami should not have discarded coker. the state of the team is sad.
Make that two people who know less than you about college football.
Also, I think the simplest playoff solution would be matching
- #1 versus #4 in a bowl game (Rose, Cotton or whatever)
- #2 versus #3 in a bowl game (Rose, Cotton or whatever)
- The two winners play in the Championship Game.
This minimally disrupts the (other) traditional bowl games that many love and also means only two teams play only one extra game (the Championship Game), important in football where every game is physically brutal.
But then again.. people will complain about the top four picks.. and what happens if by some chance two of the teams (like ok and tx) already played each other in the regular season, and play for the championship....

Right, and that can go on ad infinitum, ad nauseum. You obviously can't start with 64 teams like baseball and basketball - even starting with 8 teams means three extra games and in football, that's risking too many injuries. The nice thing about doing just the top four is there's only one extra game played (by the two top teams) thereby minimizing potential injuries.

It's going to happen - same thing in the NFL this year (Tennessee and Baltimore). Don't see how you can prevent that.

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented " France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2."A little humor, that's all.
