Looks like Michael Smerconishs support for Barack Obama didnt end with his vote for him. The Philly radio talk show host is now trying to convince Republicans thatbased on polling datathey should get in step with the stimulus.
Smerc made his, uh, principled recommendation on this evenings Hardball.
MICHAEL SMERCONISH: Its as if the campaign didnt end, and he [Pres. Obama] is still on the trail, except now hes the executive in charge. And I think its very wise. And I think it will, and is, paying dividends. If not in the House and the Senate, certainly among middle-of-the-road folks all across the country. Look at the polling data that you led with tonight. Today on my radio program I had the president of Gallup. They say 67% of Americans approve of the way he is approaching this task. So it would seem as if the GOP at his stage is out of step. And perhaps needs to get in step.

Forget principle: Smerconish says polls suggest Republicans should “get in step” with stimulus. Ping to Today show list.
They must have some dirt on this guy.
I’m sorry, Smarmy, my lock-step isn’t working yet.
He’s horrible. I used to listen to him a while ago. The only one worth listening to on Philly radio is Dom Giordano.
Pelosi, Reid and fellow Dems created it, they should be recognized for their achievement exclusively.
To heck with him.
Smerc and Spector are two of a kind. I tuned him out when he started his “14 points” on Iraq - basically a bash Bush litany. He just keeps getting worse with each passing day. I wonder how his wife can stay with a sellout.
F*$k him. That douche needs to just go away.
Another MSNBC stooge. Where does Mancrush Matthews find these guys?
Politically, its insane for Republicans to support this mess.
Even if someone is so naive to think it might succeed, the GOP will get zero credit for it- unless it is a failure.
Suppose that the “stimulus” passes at $780 billion. When it fails to produce the results desired, the GOP can expect to receive the lion’s share of blame for the stimulus being “too small” to work. The “hard negotiating” by Specter and Snowe will have “forced” the Dems to reduce the amount of pork.
No you idiot. They need to oppose the beast
I used to listen to Smerconish, but in the last year or two he’s lost me. I’m a fairly regular caller into the Dom show. He’s the best.
He’s a non-entity trying to convince himself he is somebody. I stopped listening to him and thankfully, we have WNTP here in Philadelphia. I have to wonder how he can abandon all principle and common sense for one guy, but I know he is in love with Arlen, and perhaps, has the same thrill going up his leg as Matthews does for BHO. He claims that the GOP is too caught up in social issues, and that’s why he left the party; and I was thinking about this today - like slavery, abolition? Should the GOP have abandoned those principles too? I truly believe moderates lack principle, except when it is in their own best interest. I was going to leave a comment on the blog, but I think he should be relegated to the anonimity that he so richly deserves.
He will think differently after the economy goes belly up.
I used to listen to this guy but stopped when he got all lovey with Obama..I listen to Bill Bennett in the morning instead.
Smerconish is a NE Republican NOT a conservative. He went on MSNBC and was turned even more to the dark side. I suspect that his numbers have gone way down, but not sure
Based on everything I’ve heard from Smerconish, I’d bet my right arm his true politics are far left. His claim to be “conservative” is a straight out lie.
The brilliant plan is to come out at times like this, thinking he will sway conservatives to follow his lead.
It’s all part of the strategy to disguise liberalism as conservatism because they know it would never win on its own merits.
