..shut down state government.

Based on their performance the last 10 years and especially the last 2 or 3.. that might not be a bad thing at all.

Precisely the same thought crossed my mind as I read this.

To avoid raising taxes and still balance the books in Sacramento, you'd have to virtually shut down state government.

And??

Seriously, I'm sure the LAT thinks "shutting down state government" means cutting off medcal invitro fertilization to "qualified" individuals.

**Instead, you could eliminate virtually all state money for healthcare and social services — grants for the aged, blind and disabled, assistance for the homebound, medical care for the poor, mental health treatment, welfare. . . . No exceptions.

Of course, you’d then be turning away tons of money from Washington, which shares the costs. And you would be violating some federal laws. But there, it’s done. You’ve avoided a tax increase. What a state!**

Sounds like an excellent idea, cut out the social spending and the spending to the public schools and the state can spend more on roads, public safety, state colleges, etc. Everything that states did well for 150 years until liberals decided that social spending was the primary function of government.

Just think of what the Federal Taxpayer saves as well if we eliminate the stupid social programs.

True, why can’t the state reduce spending? 12 Billion a year to illegal aliens, etc. All the taxes are at the national max already. Something fundamentally wrong here that increased taxes won’t fix!

And the problem is...?

Just close all the government indoctrination centers (public schools) and the budget would be balanced.

There is something that EVERY city, county, state and ESPECIALLY the US gubmint should do right now: budgeting!

So, instead of seriously looking at dropping costs, they want to break it down into thirds: 1/3 budgeting, 1/3 new loans (which won’t work because the state can’t get a loan at a decent rate - so this becomes MORE taxes) and 1/3 tax increases! They should be doing AT LEAST 50% budgeting - and simply cut back until it HURTS!

Then people will see where the problems are - just like us regular people that get up and go to work EVERY SINGLE DAY! When you or I do not have enough money to make our weekly/monthly bills - we are REQUIRED to prioritize and CUT spending. We MUST limit the money going out, because we cannot just “increase” our income.

Let me see if I have this right. The Democrat-controlled legislature spends and spends and spends until it has spent more than $42 billion than it expects to take in. Rather than cut government to the bone which is what any reasonable person would do, Skelton is upset that no Republican will vote to raise taxes $42 billion?

I wonder why Mr. Skelton doesn't donate half his pay to the state of California. If he and all the limousine liberals from California would do, the state of California would be rolling in dough...for a year until the liberals in the legislature spent more money.

Shut down the state of California. I suspect most people would be surprised at how little a difference they would actually see in their day-to-day lives.

Actually, it is apparent that George Skelton can't do the math.

Californicateistan is over the top on the curve. Each increase in tax and/or regulation increases spending and reduces tax collections. The ONLY way to save the state from Soviet Union or Zimbabwe syndrome, is to CUT spending massively.

The worst narcotic addiction for a people is that of government spending for the populace to feel good. Withdrawal often results in death, continued addiction always results in death.

George "Slumberin" Skelton is a lefty. The GOP is not obligated to enable the Democrats' spending addiction. How they resolve that is THEIR problem. Higher taxes should not be part of a budget solution for which the GOP should vote. It needs to be taken OFF the table!

This is all playing out as a pleasant surprise to me. At last, the GOP has found sufficient backbone to blow up a corrupt and irreparable state government. I look forward to watching the consquences rain down on the Coalition of Shakedown Artists and “diversity” adovcates who spoiled a once wonderful state. State employees, welfare cheats, teachers, illegals — you’re all about to get what you deserve: NOTHING. With a little luck PERS and STRS will be dismantled and the full vaue of both funds (including the employees’ “share”) will fund tax credits to those who actually contribute something to the state’s economy. Now that’s the sort of wealth redistribution I can get behind!

Didn’t this state recently legislate higher spending on embryonic stem cell research, and auto fuel requirements, and minimum wage and health benefits, yada yada yada in the face of these same looming deficits? How do such spenders continue to get elected and then face no accountability in the media? In fact, those who warned of the stupidity of mounting spending are excoriated by the press for their intransigence.

To avoid raising taxes and still balance the books in Sacramento, you'd have to virtually shut down state government.

Then clearly the government of California is spending too much money, has overextended itself, and needs to revise its working premise of providing a massive social safety net to millions upon millions of people.

No...wait a minute, it's all Republicans fault. They won't demand more from the taxpayer. Those greedy so and so's.
