Culture of conspiracy: The Birthers (mainstream decides to cover)
Politico ^ | 3-1-09 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/01/2009 8:22:44 AM PST by STARWISE

Bill Clinton had the Vince Foster "murder." George W. Bush had 9/11 Truth. And the new administration has brought with it a new culture of conspiracy: The Birthers.

Out of the gaze of the mainstream and even the conservative media is a flourishing culture of advocates, theorists and lawyers, all devoted to proving that Barack Obama isn't eligible to be president of the United States.

Viewed as irrelevant by the White House, and as embarrassing by much of the Republican Party, the subculture still thrives from the conservative website WorldNetDaily, which claims that some 300,000 people have signed a petition demanding more information on Obama's birth, to Cullman, Alabama, where Sen. Richard Shelby took a question on the subject at a town hall meeting last week.

Their confinement to the fringe hasn't cooled the passion of believers; the obscure New York preacher James Manning turned up at a National Press Club session in December to declare the president "the most notorious criminal in the history not just of America, but of this entire planet."

"A quick reality check, before we dive in: The challenges to Obama's eligibility have no grounding in evidence. Courts across the country have summarily rejected the movement's theory — that Obama can't be a citizen because his father wasn't —as a misreading of U.S. law; and Hawaii officials, along with contemporary birth announcements, affirm that Obama was in fact born in Honolulu in 1961."

“the obscure New York preacher James Manning turned up at a National Press Club session in December to declare the president “the most notorious criminal in the history not just of America, but of this entire planet.”

That sane statement is certain to win over converts.

Wow, does this mean that overpaid do-nothings on the View are going to retract their idiotic support for the "Truthers"?

Viewed as irrelevant by the White House

Right, Mr. Smith, you ignorant douche bag (sorry, I couldn't resist the ad hominem attack). That's why 0bama has spent hundreds of thousands defending against the suits.

And before anyone jumps in and says "There's no proof he's spent hundreds of thousands" (I've heard that here and at DU land), guess what - SOMEONE is defending against all those suits that have been filed. SOMEONE HAD to be, or they wouldn't have all been dropped. You don't think those cases got to the Supreme Court unopposed, do you? That the Supreme Court just dropped them because it was the right thing to do, and that there were no legal briefs filed in opposition? Right. I have some land in Florida that you're going to be interested in, I can tell.

You might make the case that interested parties other than the White House were defending against the suits, but then I'd have to ask you where's that money and the impetus to defend coming from? The answer is obvious. So, I feel justified in calling Ben Smith an ignorant douche bag, because you don't have to have photocopies of attorney's invoices for defending Zero - you just have to have about a nickel's worth of common sense.

The opportunity for the White House? It's one of which some conservatives are sharply aware — that the Birthers may discredit Obama's more mainstream enemies.

Hear that birthers? By advancing your crackpot theories, you are helping the enemy. That's why I and many other conservatives are taking the time to debunk your nonsense.

"At some level, they're not that bad to have around because it reminds people that under the mainstream conservative press there's this bubbling up of really irrational hatred for the guy," said former Clinton White House press secretary Jake Siewert.

Why, oh why, dear birthers, do you want to give the enemy this kind of amunition?

BS, you are just falling for the propaganda spin machine.

The DNC/MSM seeks to discredit any peeceived threat from the Right, be it Right to Lifers, George Allen, Sarah Palin, “homophobes” who like NASCAR, and on and on.

people shouldnt compromise their principles because they are afraid of the spin machine.

Where is the authentic birth certificate, and why hasnt it been publicly produced?

Politico came out of nowhere just in time for the primaries and seems dedicated to promoting “moderates”.

I consider them to be so. Started by former WashPost

Illuminati secret societies fund a Socialist to become President
and bankrupt the U.S.
Sound too strange? Just another "theory" on Art Bell? Think again.

‘Culture of Complicity’

Politico and the MSM!

All we want is for Obama to show us his COLB..the long form one...but he will not do it..has not done it and is spending millions of dollars fighting it.

There is something there he does not want the American people to see.

What is it?

I understood the “challenges to Obama’s eligibility” have NOT BEEN HEARD due to lack of standing of the plaintiffs.
Please tell us WHICH COURT has “rejected... as a misready of US law”

Why don't you take your little commie technique of crushing free thought through insults and go join the other mindless people in the Dem sheep pen. If you have no more freedom of thought than that then you must love commie fascism.

Your accusations and denial are infantile at best. I've seen school yard bullies who can intimidate better than you. What is it to you if people ask questions? They have every right to do so and Obama is hiding something so you are left with nothing more than childish intimidation. Pitiful.

"Untold numbers of people have asked us to look into it," said Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch, which recently sued to block Hillary Clinton, on technical grounds connected to her Senate seat, from taking the position of secretary of state. "When we sued over Hillary ineligibility there were a lot of folks saying, 'Why weren't you suing over Obama's ineligibility?'" he said.. Fitton said he hadn't "seen any credible evidence Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen eligible for the presidency." "If people understood better what the law is, I don't think they'd be as concerned as they are," he said.

I wondered where J.W. has been with all this.

Well, the left worries "of really irrational hatred for the guy". But my hatred for him is quite rational. My hatred for BHO has nothing to do with where he was born, who his parents were or what color/colors he is. However, the white liberal press/academia/pols who sycophantically support BHO solely on the basis of his race would be a bit surprised to look into my soul and realize how much greater my hatred is of them.

Wasn't it the press that accused the last President of “lacking intellectual curiosity”? In the case of the Burf Certifigate, and the associated issues surrounding it such as foreign-issued Passports, foreign trips in his youth, his application for the Illinois Bar Association, and absence of college records (including his benefactors that paid for his education), where is the drive-by intellectual curiosity? Where were they on the Beau Biden, Larry Sinclair press conference, Joe Biden, extradition, dropped charges, and release fiasco? ....crickets....
