WASHINGTON — The Navy has assigned a heavily armed destroyer to escort the U.S. surveillance ship that got into a high-seas confrontation with Chinese ships last weekend.

A defense official says the Pearl Harbor-based destroyer Chung-Hoon is keeping a close eye on the unarmed sub-hunting ship Impeccable as it continues operations in the South China Sea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe sensitive ship movements.

The official says the escort ship joined the Impeccable on Wednesday.

The Chinese understand the art of confrontation, as do the North Koreans.

Maybe a reflection on the kidnapping of the USS Pueblo by N.K. would be good. It the Chinese do stage a confrontation it will likely create a “do or die” international incident. They would like nothing better than “detaining” a modern ship of the line to learn all its secrets and they would not hesitate to risk the lives of thousands to accomplish such.

Vigilance needs to be the name of the game, as well as military air cover and lots and lots of plane being able to get to the location in a hurry and a commander who is bold and not over ruled by those in WA DC.

WooHoo! You can see the old shipyard from my family’s Fish Camp on Mary Walker Bayou, in Gautier.

That's why we need the Stennis (in Korea) or the Washington (in Yololoma) carrier group to get closer.

Okinanawa is too far waay.

The Pueblo was a spy ship taken by the North Koreans in international waters and that was a shameful debacle.

In the current incident, the US DDG, Chung-hoo, is already with the Impeccable so the Chinese are not going to be able to just take her now...it would have to be done after a major shooting war with the USS Chung-hoo. And she is a very capable vessel.

I am hoping that we have air cover and sub surface cover in addition to the Chung-hoo.

Sending guns is only effective if we are willing to use them.

Bush got tested over the EP-3 a few months into his term and he blew it. Let's see what happens.

Sending a destroyer sends a message that the U.S. isn't happy over what happened to the Impeccable. Sending an entire strike force would be premature. If China ups the ante and messes with the Chung Hoon then yes, our response should be to reply in kind. If the matter dies with the harassment of last Sunday then the U.S. has sent its message without China loosing much face, if any.

Sorry, but Willis “Ching” A. Lee was not of Chinese descent. He got his nickname at the USNA because it sounded “Chinese”. Was instrumental in killing a lot of Japs though.

My dad was of Chinese descent was a “Flying Tiger” and was instrumental in killing a lot of Japs too!

PC language filter off.

RADM Willis Lee did indeed bear the nickname “Ching Chong China” ... but he was not Chinese. He was from Kentucky, and related to that other famous Chinee (not), Robert E. Lee.

Most of the he Arleigh Burkes are named for major-league butt kickers. It’s a good thing. There are a few stinking politicians thrown in there.

If a carrier group were escorting the ship, all that noise would make it extremely difficult to find subs.

I wondered if China weren't trying to sneak a sub in or out of the area by surrounding our listening ship with four vessels and making as much noise as they could to prevent us from tracking their sub as it transited the area.

The Chinese fighter pilot went into the drink after ramming our aircraft and was never found. After the Chinese seized our aircraft, Bush sent a letter of condolence to the Chinese pilots wife.

And apologized for entering Chinese airspace.
