Seems very straightforward to me. I wondered if anyone else had been knighted by a British monarch. Good find!

After WW2, the UK created a special “knighthood” so American Generals could be knighted and not violate that pesky Constitution.

Its "Honorary" Knigethood. It'll get him some free drinks but it merely an honorarium. Perfectly acceptable.

Although I'm told he does have to say..."Neet!...Neet!"...several times a day...loudly...and in the presence of at least 3 people.

The Constitution states no title of nobility shall be granted by the US. Splash's title was granted by England.

How could he be knighted without kneeling before the Queen? Did she use an old photo of him crawling away from the Chappaquidick?

(And yes, it would appear this is in contravention of that remnant of our republican government- the Constitution.)

It’s the Democratic Congress. And it’s Teddy Kennedy. Before he receives it Congress will give him permission.

But it’s no biggie. Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, MacArthur, and Reagan were all given British knighthoods. So don’t feel this is some new, unprecedented event.

Kennedy’s is only an honorary “title.” He gets no land, no political power, can’t even legally (according to British law) call himself “sir” anything. I don’t see this as a violation, really.

Ted Kennedy’s Knighthood is as illegitimate as Zero’s Presidency and Hillary’s appointment to Secretary of Foggy Bottom. They’re all impostors.

The language is even stronger in the Articles of Confederation but I agree, at this point Congress wouldn’t deny Ted anything.

The Constitution is an obsolete document and should not be taken seriously any more.

"I heard that recently Ted Kennedy was Knighted by the Queen of England. In article 1 section 9 of the Constitution, there is a section that seems to forbid this."

Honorary Knighthoods are akin to being given the key to a city. Or like when the Boy Scouts will give someone an Honorary Membership.

It just means they think you are a really nifty Dude or dudette, and you can go into the club house but you don't have any other privileges.

And Congress will no doubt pass a bill allowing Kennedy to accept it. Great Britain has been passing out honorary knighthoods like they’re going out of style. Reagan, Bush Senior, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg, Norman Schwartzkopf, Tommy Franks, the list is endless.

The answer is not intuitive, but it is (I think) kind of funny.

The clause in question says: "And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under [the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State."

Believe it or not, a senate seat is not an "office of profit or trust" as far as the Constitution is concerned. When the Constitution talks about "offices of the United States" it means executive or judicial office.

See, for instance:

Article I, Section 6, Clause 2: "no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office."

Article II, Section 1, Clause 2: "no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector."

Etc.

They made Elton John a knight. Now they make Ted Kennedy a knight. How much can a Knighthood be worth these days.

It’s just another way of turning a praiseworthy gift into the new Nobel political prize.

And you think Congress DIDN'T give consent?
