Pope: Condoms 'Increase' AIDS Epidemic in Africa

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE —

Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday that the distribution of condoms is not the answer in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Benedict has never before spoken explicitly on condom use although he has stressed that the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

Some priests and nuns working with victims of the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa question the church's opposition to condoms.

The pope also said that he intends to make an appeal for "international solidarity" for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn.

He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give "spiritual and moral" suggestions.

Describing the current crisis as the consequence of "a deficit of ethics in economic structures," the pope said, "It is here that the church can make a contribution."

Benedict's seven-day pilgrimage will take him to Cameroon and Angola.

Africa is the fastest-growing region for the Roman Catholic Church.

To answer your question...

My spouse, nor I, would ever take any chance of giving
the other a horrible disease. We love one another too much.

When you love someone, you make sacrifices, and the sacrifice would be no love making.

You actually answered two questions in you reply, although
one was not asked.

“Yes, if I were to have sex with a person who has HIV/AIDS,
I would only do so wearing a condom.”

I really don't want to be insulting, there's no need for that in polite company. But I really have to think that you're not exactly all there are you...

“Safer” is not “safe.” Here’s a simple illustration: it is safer to be struck by a speeding Mini Cooper than to be struck by a speeding Peterbilt hauling steel trusses.

You qualified it to someone with HIV who is your spouse. Thus, the answer you posted (”yes”) is actually “no.”

Very slippery.

So, let’s rename “safety equipment” like helmets, pads, etc to “safer equipment” since they don’t protect people from death or serious injury 100% of the time.

He wouldn't leave his wife, and not having sex to protect his life shouldn't be a problem for either of them.

You see, sex isn't all there is to a marriage. Sex is mainly for the purpose of making babies.

You've been taught that sex is some uncontrollable urge that you simply must have or else your dick will fall off or something.

That simply isn't true. You can live without it just fine, and if your wife has a terrible disease, then you'll have to, won't you.

Or would You be so weak and need to go out and have an affair, breaking your vows and committing a sin?

You are missing your assumed proposition (P6) that African Catholics will not opt to abstain or be faithful any more than African pagans.

This proposition is false, thus your argument fails, in addition to the reasons given by Petronski.

...it has been *PROVEN* that the use of condoms decreases the likelihood of catching a STD across the board?

"...an STD..." generally? Or HIV specifically?

Was the study conducted or funded by someone with an ulterior motive?

Like there are so many walmarts in africa for them to go get jobs at.

While you may think you are funny, You are anything but.

Obviously you haven't a clue what life is like in most parts of Africa, besides the washed stuff you see on your TV.

I think he was trying to be darkly ironic, with a hip sense of utter trenchancy...like Jeaneane Garafalo or Michael Moore.

Condoms 'Increase' AIDS Epidemic in Africa

Of course. Condoms are enabling technology for promiscuity, which spreads disease.

That’s the claim from one study. The article nevertheless points to lots of data which shows that it was, in fact, the abstinence and being faithful that was responsible for Uganda’s success.

Could be you're reality challanged...

Here is reality. If you only had sex with your spouse, and your spouse does likewise, your chance of contracting AIDS is about 0%.

Christians should teach that, not some garbage about putting a rubber on your johnson. Whatever that doctrine is, it's not Christianity.

Now, can you honestly say that following moral laws such as having sex only in the context of marriage as intended wouldn’t be “more effective” than giving out condoms and encouraging risky behavior?

The empirical evidence in Africa says yes. For several years, Uganda had much lower rates of HIV infection than most of its neighboring countries. The difference was that Uganda had a systematic program of discouraging risky sexual behaviors with a strong emphasis on abstinence as the BEST method of preventing the spread of HIV. The neighboring countries had aggressive condom distribution programs to promote "safer" sexual activity of using a product with a 15% failure rate at preventing pregnancy and not even measured in terms of the failure rate at preventing the spread of STD's. As health officials became more enlightened and decided to augment Uganda's HIV/AIDS prevention programs with the distribution of condoms, the rate of HIV infection started rising.

...every young teenage and pre-teen girl that if forced into sex will get AIDS...

You assume that all such predators have HIV/AIDS, but I'll set that aside to get to the real problems:

Do you think one willing to force a teen or pre-teen into sex is going to be conscientious about a condom?

What do you think is the condom failure rate in forced (probably violent) sex?

i think it was uganda. I seem to remember Rush talking about this country about 3 years ago when some report was released that showed this country was the only one in africa to have significantly reduced aids. Abstinence is the only guarantee against AIDS

humblegunner needs to learn that condoms are porous; that means they have holes in them, and those holes are large enough for HIV to pass through.
