4 cops shot, suspect dead after Calif. traffic stop

Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers

OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.

Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

This is so horribly sad. Prayers for all concerned.

As news of the shootings reached the Oakland police community, officers showed up in droves at both Highland Hospital, where the officers were taken to and the Eastmont Substation, just a few blocks from the shooting scene.

Some officers were crying uncontrollably while others hugged each other. Mayor Ron Dellums visited the Oakland Police Officers Association to offer his condolences.

You know they started in Santa Barbara and moved to Oakland in the 70’s. No shock that, can you imagine the affluent people and movie stars in Santa Barbara having something like The Your Black Muslim Bakery in their midst? In Oakland it was a whole other story, they blended right in.

“Wow, that’s not the Oakland I knew :)”

The last time I was there was in 1959 and it was a human sewer then.

May Lovelle Mixon receive the justice he deserves in the next life.

The video I saw from a CBS station up there showed 73rd street and something, couldn’t make out the cross street. Definitely gang type of territory with a lot of sophisticated graffiti.

Yes, that's it. 73rd Avenue crosses MacArthur Boulevard where Foothill Boulevard joins MacArthur from the north. After this intersection proceed east on 73rd, turn right onto Sunkist Drive (there might still be a small doughnut shop there, Quality Doughnuts), and then you're at Edwards Avenue, where there is an onramp for I-580.

I know this because my parents used to take this route from I-580 to the Oakland Airport. They stopped, of course.

This is a tragedy for everyone. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the deceased officers. Thank you and all in law enforcement for doing a thankless, dangerous, necessary job. I hope you retire in happy old age without ever running across anybody like this cop killing idiot.

Yes, it was a very fast moving press conference. I think that the Chief indicated there were two weapons involved in the incident. It sounds like the perp was on the move expecting trouble and not going to be taken alive.
