Even after 45 years, I find all of it astonishing. For all the weak lyrics, for "Out on the Streets" they hit on a tune that is haunting, and Morton put a lot of thought into the production.
It's amazing to think of what went on at 1650 Broadway. In one part of the building you had Neil Sedaka, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Cynthia Weil, Barry Mann, Gerry Goffin, Carol King and George Morton cranking out tunes and recording them with aspiring acts from New York.
Down the hall you had Phil Spector, Gene Pitney, Sonny Bono, Cheryl La Pierre (aka Cher), Jack Nietzsche, David Gates and "Bones" Howe doing the same thing for a different group of people.
It was an exciting time.

It was my high school record hop DJ time.
That was followed by college radio at WKDU at Drexel U. in Philly, followed by KING in Seattle, where I had a meteroric rise followed by an equally meteoric fall.
Eventually you have to grow up and do real work. Thank God I retired from that.
But there was nothing like radio while it lasted.
