Gun-Free Zones Are a Magnet for Attacks Like the Tragedy In Binghampton
Fox News ^ | April 3, 2009 | John R. Lott, Jr.

Posted on 04/03/2009 2:57:41 PM PDT by JohnRLott

Time after time multiple victim public shootings occur in gun free zones, public places where citizens are not legally able to carry guns. The horrible attack today in Binghamton, New York is no different. Every multiple victim public shooting that I have studied where more than three people have been killed has taken place where guns are banned.

You would think that it would be an important part of the news stories for a simple reason: Gun-free zones are a magnet for these attacks. Extensive discussions of these attacks can be found here and here. We want to keep people safe, but the problem is that it is the law-abiding good citizens, not the criminals, who obey these laws. We end up disarming the potential victims and not the criminals. Rather than making places safe for victims, we unintentionally make them safe for the criminal.

At some point you would think the media would notice that something is going on here, that these murderers aren’t just picking their targets at random. . . . .

#1 ... I’ve given up worrying about how to spell Binghamton, I’ve had to CHange my name to make it easier... they screw that one up, too.

#2 New York Officials Idea of Self defense is ... Help the burglar Carry out YOUR TV to their truck.

#3 All the GUN LAWS in the world, INCLUDING COnfiscation, would NOT have Stopped this Individual... to say so, is not only foolhardy ... it’s downright STUPID.

Looks like another secondary factor is all the cops and other grown-ups with guns and badges that surround the scene to make sure no hero rushes in to save anybody.

The mainstream media do see it, they just don’t report it. Their ultimate goal is the unilateral disarmament of all law abiding citizens.

Only then can the state be the only means of personal protection of thei subjects lives. The subjects themselves must not yield this power. Just another measure of control.

Not to mention the other obvious reasons that the state wants to disarm law abiding patriots.

Great article and analysis as always...

Didn’t I just read Canada is ditching their gun bans since it doesn’t reduce gun violence?

Switzerland has mandatory armed services duty, IIRC, and each person serving is required to keep their gun at home with them and bring it if they are called up.

Now maybe that's all just rumor, but if true, using the gun grabbers logic, there shouldn't be anyone left alive in Switzerland because *guns are evil*.

Googling *murder rate Switerland* brings up some interesting articles.

WHEN are people (other than those who read these forums) going to realize that the police are WORTHLESS to protect citizens from bad things happening?

Are our "leaders" -- people in power that stupid, or are they just so fearful of an armed citizenry (or both)?

WHEN is the unarmed citizenry going to wake up and realize that they, and they alone, are responsible for their own safety and become an ARMED CITIZENRY?

As a kid I walked for all twelve years of my schooling past the site of the ACA in Binghamton NY. There were residences there then. Some of my relatives in Binghamton are strongly conservative and use the center as a venue for e.g. of meetings of the Catholic Daughters of America. They wouldn’t corroborate the lefty charge.

On a lighter note, Rod Serling (went to school around the corner, at (then) Binghamton Central High School.

I heard the police spokesman say that the brave receptionist hid under her desk and called 911. She stayed on the phone for 90 minutes while the SWAT team assembled.

Does anyone else see a problem here? This is just like the incident at Virginia Tech. Now I have as much admiration for the police as anyone, but how many times are they going to spend an hour or so gathering all their team and fancy equipment before they actually DO something?

The media for once is actually baiting the “spokespersons” and the chief of police here today...

I just heard the desk guy on FoxNews actually ask...

“What can police do to prevent this type of massacre from happening?”

The answer the Chief gave just now was sorely incomplete...

“Police cannot prevent this from happening.”

AND!!!

“If the laws of the state encouraged and allowed normal everyday law-abiding citizens to carry firearms on their person for self-defensive purposes, I would see that minimizing, and or deterring mass shootings like this, citizens would become a very effective means to combat this problem.”

I have one huge problem with Glocks, say the G30. I simply CANNOT depress the mag release. I have to use my off-hand to press it. I think that is unacceptable. I wish the Glock mag release wasn’t so difficult to depress. That is my only complaint.

When you discuss gun crimes, never allow the conversation to end without discussing the one that was stopped short in 2007 by an armed citizen. Never forget the New Life shootings.

Matthew Murray was armed with hundreds of rounds, ready to kill as many in the New Life Church sanctuary as he could. He had already killed two people in Arvada at a missionary training school, and had shot a family and another woman, killing young two sisters in the New Life parking lot on his way into the church.

Murray entered the sanctuary and opened fire, shooting one person in the arm.

Before he could shoot any more, he was shot and badly wounded by Jean Assam, a security guard and church member carrying a concealed weapon. After Assam shot him several times, Murray shot and killed himself.

Jean Assam saved the lived of at least 100 people that day because she was armed in a place the gunman didn't expect an armed person to be.

Tomorrow I go to take my CCW class! Woo-hoo!

Congrats!! I hope your wait for the actual Permit isn't as long as mine is likely to be. In AR, they have up to 120 calendar days to either issue or to explain a denial.

I'm at a little over 60 days now. The time is dragging by...
