Obama Team Mulls Aims Of Somali Extremists
The Washington Post ^ | April 11, 2009 | Greg Jaffe and Karen DeYoung

Posted on 04/11/2009 2:29:51 PM PDT by Cyberrat

Senior Obama administration officials are debating how to address a potential terrorist threat to U.S. interests from a Somali extremist group, with some in the military advocating strikes against its training camps. But many officials maintain that uncertainty about the intentions of the al-Shabab organization dictates a more patient, nonmilitary approach.

"Some in the Defense Department have been frustrated by what they see as a failure to act."

Some Americans (like me) tend to agree. This is not only a failure to act, it is a failure to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States!

He mulls aims? Seems to me they are achieving what they set out to do. Prove that this administration will not act.

If they have any aims besides the ransom money, those aims would be to get some foolish nations to treat them like freedom fighters and offer them international political patronage “aid”, in the form of “development grants” with the “community organizers”, like the pirates, included in the lists of approved beneficiaries of the aid.

It would be just like Obama, and would translate well with everything he does - shift the payment of the money from the private sector to the government(s) and institutionalize it.

American recruits of Somali extremists addressed a press conference in the conflict-wracked country this week to rally other youths to join their jihad (holy war), a US monitoring group said Friday.

On April 5, “two American members of the Mujahideen Youth Movement (MYM) identified as Abu-Muslim and Abu Yaxye” spoke at the news conference and acknowledged that “many” Somali-Americans are “all over Somalia to join the jihad,” said the SITE Intelligence Group.

The pair said they are “Somali youth” from the United States and are stationed near the southern port of Kismayo.

Last month the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned US lawmakers that "radicalized clusters" of Somali-American youths as young as 12 were being recruited by Islamic terror groups.

Pirates throughout history have always wanted one thing:

Money!

Those kidnapped have always had two choices--pay or kill the pirates.

If the administration can't figure out what to do they should just flip a coin and move on.

Since November, the FBI has raced to uncover any ties to foreign extremist networks in the unexpected departures of numerous Somali American teenagers and young men, who family members believe are in Somalia.

The investigation is active in Boston; San Diego; Seattle; Columbus, Ohio; and Portland, Maine, a U.S. law enforcement official said, and community members say federal grand juries have issued subpoenas in Minneapolis and elsewhere.

Panel: Somali extremists pose U.S. threat

Somali-Americans recruited by radical Islamic groups to fight in Africa also pose a threat to the United States, a U.S. Senate panel said Wednesday.

Concerns about “radicalized” Somali-Americans were sparked by the discovery that a 27-year-old Somali-American college student from Minneapolis, Shirwa Ahmed, was a suicide bomber in an Oct. 29 wave of attacks in Somalia attributed to Islamic militant group al-Shabaab, which reportedly has close links to al-Qaida, The Washington Post reported.

Since then, the FBI says it has moved quickly to probe the disappearances of U.S. Somali teens and young men, who, some family members say, have likely gone to Somalia to take part in an Islamic war against the West.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said during a Wednesday hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, “The dangers brought to light by these revelations is clear: radicalized individuals trained in terrorist tactics and in possession of American passports can clearly pose a threat to the security of our country,” CNN reported.

Testifying at the hearing was Philip Mudd, a director of the FBI’s national security branch, who told the panel that while the estimated 70,000 to 200,000 Somali U.S. immigrants and their families aren’t “radicalized” as a community, small numbers of them are recruiting potential terrorists.

Mogadishu, Somalia (APA) - Somali extremists in southern Somalia on Sunday welcomed the recent announcement by Osama Bin Ladin for the uprooting of the month and a half old government in Somalia, according to a spokesman of the Islamic administration in Kismayo in Lower Jubba region.

“This is a holy message to Islamic fighters in Somalia. It is a clear and welcomed message,” Sheikh Hassan Yacquub, the spokesman of the Islamic administration in Kismayo said during a press conference held in Kismayo on Sunday.

The statement by Sheikh Yacqub comes after the Al-Qaeda leader called on Islamist warriors to overthrow the newly elected Somali president, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The administration believes the best course is to “run the pirates out of options”, according to a defence official, rather than risk a botched military operation that could result in Phillips’s death.

The failed state of Somalia is already a security nightmare for Obama. Days before the hostage drama, security and defence officials were discussing whether to go after training camps for militant extremists from the Al-Shabab group, which has terrorist links to Al-Qaeda.

Rooting out piracy could require blockading the ports rather than merely patrolling the seas. That, in turn, would be certain to inflame the Muslim extremists who already control a swathe of Somali territory and Obama would have another war on his hands. He would rather speak softly and keep the big stick in the background

No, Hillary is keeping score. Within a year, she’ll resign as SoS because of the ineptitude of BHO’s foreign policy. Then she’ll challenge in ‘12, and probably win the nomination.
