Flu is in the news, with some people fearing a possible pandemic from the latest strain. The most recent threat, initially labeled “swine flu,” comes from an H1N1 influenza virus, the same “subtype” responsible for the horrendous 1918 Spanish influenza outbreak. What makes this virus new is that it traded parts with other flu viruses and mutated. However, neither of these processes demonstrates Darwinian evolution...

It would have been nice if Brian Thomas put in some language demonstrating what a pussycat this virus has turned out to be. But still, the main point is quite good.

Is this the same flu as in 1976? At that time I had to take vaccine and many people were paralyzed and died from the vaccine. Got the flu and then pneumonia in 1976. Holy Moly! Hope it is not the same or I might have not problem since I have already been infected with it.

Yeah, "pussycat". Your ordinary garden variety flu has a 1% death rate (or less). Your more virulent nasty Spanish Flu type firus has a 2.5% death rate.

This sucker is stuck down around 5%.

Different. That time they had a vaccine out in time to innoculate everyone so the number of cases (and therefore the death rate) were minimized. At the same time, as with any vaccine, some people died.

Did you know people died from smallpox vaccination? Do you think it was worth it for them to have died from the vaccination so that millions of others could live free of the disease?

These are difficult moral questions ~ comparing one pile of dead bodies with another.

Here in Ga. a private school has been closed for 2 weeks because a 14 year old tested positive...BUT the sports teams from the school have been banned from playing in the end of year playoffs! Such an over-reaction!!! Couldn’t they just test the players and, if healthy, allow them to complete their years - especially sad for the seniors!
