Obama Proposes Extending D.C. Voucher Program [flips his flop]
Washington Post ^ | 5-6-09 | Shailagh Murray

President Obama will seek to extend the controversial D.C. school voucher program until all 1,716 participants have graduated from high school, although no new students will be accepted, according to an administration official who has reviewed budget details scheduled for release tomorrow.

The budget documents, which expand on the fiscal 2010 blueprint that Congress approved last month by outlining Obama's priorities in detail, would provide $12.2 million for the Opportunity Scholarship Program for the 2009-2010 school year. The new language also would revise current law that makes further funding for existing students contingent on Congress's reauthorization of the program beyond its current June 2010 expiration date. Under the Obama proposal, further congressional action would not be necessary, and current students would automatically receive grants until they finish school.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan had told reporters that it didn't make sense "to take kids out of a school where they're happy and safe and satisfied and learning," but Democrats effectively terminated the program by requiring its reauthorization. Obama must now convince Democratic lawmakers to endorse a gradual phase out by continuing to include grant funding in future appropriation bills.

Either vouchers are effective or they're not, in which case the program should be canceled, or continued. He's not concerned about the "disruption" to the kids, rather the potential disruption of local Obama worship.

Maybe he saw the angry mob at the DC Gay Marriage meeting. They said they got screwed twice this week.

“controversial”

Only with the help of the DNC and the Teacher’s Union could a program that does a better job of educating children, with less money, be considered “controversial”.

Maybe if they held a class on fitting condoms to bananas, it would be less “controversial”.

Sheesh.

They still want Black people on to stay on the plantation. They'll just lie about it this year and then next year, cut the legs out from under us while we're asleep. I hate this man. I really really hate him.

Shameful! Not allowing new participants is an assurance of failure for these children.

Ironic that the voting bloc that supported him most overwhelmingly (blacks) are the ones that may be most harmed by his policies.

So public pressure actually worked this time?

The DC voucher program has been wildly successful:

Since the Obama daughters both attend a private school, it would be politically foolish and embarrassing to deprive poor children in DC from attending private schools.

Obama is doing this because his daughters classmates would be hurt and they might dislike his girls because of his pay to play to teachers unions.

It’s also providing a challenge to President Barack Obama’s education policies that’s as close to home as his daughters’ classrooms.

It hasn’t stopped any of them in Congress. All of them send their kids to private schools here, or keep the kids in their home states so as to avoid DC schools. They are shameless, even when called on it.

But that's what he's doing, the program is closed to new entrants. The media won't call him on that, they'll rave about his compassion.
