Italy does not want to become a "multi-ethnic" country and will continue its newly adopted policy of sending boatloads of immigrants and asylum seekers back to North Africa, the prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said.
Previous Left-wing governments had "opened the doors to clandestine migrants coming from other countries, with an idea of a multi-ethnic Italy," Mr Berlusconi said.
But that kind of society was "not our idea", he added, as he sought to reassure Italians who were alarmed at the number of immigrants pouring into the country, particularly from eastern Europe and Africa.
The prime minister's vision of Italy was condemned by the centre-Left opposition. "Yes, Mr Premier, we have a different idea of Italy: multi-ethnic, pluralistic, free," said Giovanna Melandri, of the Democratic Party.
"A country in which the colour of your skin, or race or religion doesn't matter, but, rather, honesty and sincerity of heart do." Since launching a tough new policy on boat people last week, Italy has turned back six boats carrying a total of 1,500 immigrants and asylum seekers which were trying to reach the country's southernmost outpost, the island of Lampedusa.

This time the kickstand safety mechanism gave me the grief. The switch is cable activated; one grain of sand and the cable fails to retract, never allowing the safety switch to reset. Damn stupid design; it will be eliminated before the next trip.
That is so true, however the French are now suffering the “what goes around comes around” effect from all the former French colonies in Africa whose citizens have certain rights under French law to migrate to France.

I'd think a simple *jumper* would solve the poor design, permanently.
Of course one would have to remember to get that stand up before moving.
Unfortunately at our age, after years of practice, we tend forget that which we really ought remember. :^)

A friend returned from Italy and said that there was Muslim graffiti all over our ancient structures. I bet they wish they still had the Capos around.

What I don’t understand is why Italians don’t just get busy and make more Italians? What ever happened to all that “amore” stuff? A friend of mine said that her adult Italian cousins still live with their parents and have no inclination to get married and have their own families. As to American’s (slightly) greater fertility, they said, “What’s the matter with you guys? Don’t you have tv?”
All I’m sayin’ is, the models for all the cute little cherubs in Italian Renaissance art came from somewhere...
You are so right. We have been brainwashing our children with multiculturalism in the classrooms for 40 years to condition them to hate their heritage...Evil oppressive white capitalist pigs—We are committing suicide by doing that.
A nation needs to glorify their history and make heroes of their Founders to their children and NOT denigrate them to succeed. It is ok to list their flaws in high school, but never to marginalize them to the young which is being done in Kindergarten and elementary schools.
We don’t denigrate Martin Luther King Jr. although he had major flaws. We don’t denigrate the Muslim religion in the schools although it should be condemned and marginalized for its violence, women hating and tyranny. We don’t vilify communism, although it is so evil, it has killed millions of people and created slaves of its populations.
While schools glorify every other culture (but white European) they teach our children to loath everything that made this country the greatest one on earth in the history of the world, and so we are creating ignorant, illogical Marxists who are so easily manipulated by the media.

I saw the same thing in Rome. Anyone I asked about it just ignored the question. They are embarrassed and won’t talk about it.
