Shhhhhhh. Don’t wake the sheeple. Of course cholesterol is the cause of heart attacks, just like fat makes us fat. After all, everyone knows we can eat as many of those fat free muffins, and the fat free frozen yogurt as we want and never gain a pound.
Whistles innocently, and walks away.

Ah, but has the FDA catergorized other foodstuffs as unapproved drugs due to their labeling?

Washington, Oct. 3 - The Food and Drug Administration has warned the maker of tropical fruit drink XanGo over claims the beverage can prevent or treat cancer, depression, infection, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments. Daily News Alerts
- We respect your privacy - In a Sept. 20 letter to XanGo LLC, released Tuesday, the FDA said brochures for the purple mangosteen beverage also asserted it was "a proven, natural COX-2 inhibitor," referring to painkillers such as Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex and Merck & Co Inc.'s withdrawn Vioxx.

The Coca-Cola Company has recently come under fire by the Food and Drug Administration for its reluctance to disclose exactly what the "Plus" in Diet Coke Plus really means.
For starters, the FDA isn't exactly thrilled with the concept of fortifying an unhealthy snack drink. Couple that with the fact that the amount of vitamins and minerals added to Diet Coke Plus remains somewhat vague, and it becomes clear why the FDA deemed it appropriate to step in.

There is nothing good anymore about the FDA. The FDA is nothing more than big government waste and abuse. A conservative solution can be found from a study published in 2002:
Making Drugs Safe and Available without the FDA
This is a long paper, but very much worth the read and download. Everyone keeps complaining about the cost of drugs, however few understand that the single most responsible party for the is the Government and FDA.

Is this a joke? It's a joke because they ARE a joke. Cheerios never hurt anyone (unless you're allergic to oats). Why don't they go after the real problems in our food? Like the Chinese deliberately poisoning our food supply. Or genetically modified foods. Or bacteria leading to food poisoning. Or fake sugars (high fructose corn syrup, etc). Fake oil (Olestra). Drugs in our water supply. Bad-tasting water. Fortifying foods with unwanted vitamins. I could go on & on.

Oh, you mean I shouldn't mention
The Great Cholesterol Con by Malcolm Kendrick? You know the one where he totally busts conventional wisdom in laymen's terms about statins?
Oh, okay

Again, you’re right, and I agree with you. I’m talking in generalities, and you’re talking specifics. My point is that some news stories are designed to get people upset. This story gets people upset, and other stories are about the illegal, unconstitutional things that the government either tries or implements. They’re all there to demoralize the enemy (us). I’m not arguing with you.
Again, my apologies for not being clear. I do not speak well at times — some would say most of the time. ;-)

Actually, this isn't that surprising.
Of course it makes the FDA look like a bunch of doofuses.

ANNOUNCER: "Cheerios may cause premenstrual bloating, cramps, and irritability in women around that time of the month. They can cause diarrhea, stomachache, nausea, vomiting, and uncontrollable telekinesis. If hunger persists for more than 4 hours, see a doctor. They may cause impotence and pink-eye. Mikey may like them and take them from you."That is funny. Good work.

Or is this yet another government power grab for a non-reason? This is the Obama administration we're talking about, do they really need an excuse for a power grab?
For the record, I eat 2 cups of Honey Nut Cheerio's every day for breakfast, and have for years. Love 'em.

Anyone think that Obama will receive a tenth the criticism for calling Cheerios a drug that Reagan got for his administration calling ketchup a vegetable?
Yeah, me neither.

I hope I live to see the day when a “warning letter” is sent to some faceless bureaucrat advising him of the lack of Constitutional authorization for what they do for a living.

Nice work on this thread, org.whodat.
Seriously.
From one pharma vet to another (it’s obvious you are), thanks for adding clarity to this. Folks, General Mills is making a structure/function claim. In doing so, they’re violating the rules applicable to a new drug. Do some research before having a knee-jerk reaction to some babbling you heard on AM radio.
