Pelosi: C.I.A. Misled Congress Over Waterboarding (Pelosi: lie, version 7)
NYT ^ | 5/14/09 | Carl Hulse AND Brian Knowlton

Under fire from Republicans for what she knew about harsh questioning of terror detainees, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday acknowledged that she had learned as early as 2003 that the C.I.A. had subjected suspects to waterboarding.

At a tense press conference, Ms. Pelosi said for the first time that a staff member alerted her in February 2003 that top lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee had been briefed on the use of tough interrogation methods on terror suspects.

But she said the fact that she did not speak out at the time due to secrecy rules did not make her complicit in any abuse of detainees. She accused the C.I.A. and Bush administration of lying to Congress about what was actually transpiring with the detainees.

“I am saying that the C.I.A. was misleading the Congress and at the same the administration was misleading the Congress on weapons of mass destruction,” Ms. Pelosi said.

Republicans immediately took issue with the speaker’s comments, saying that she was in essence blaming the intelligence professionals for misleading her.

“The speaker’s comments continue to raise more questions than provide answers,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader.

Pelosi has long been diagnosed with a character defect which leads to profuse deceitfulness. It is contagious mainly among Democrats.

San Fran Nan is not a very smart person. She is a brilliant politician or she wouldn’t be where she is. She used up all her brain power becoming this brilliant politician and let everything else slide. If you have ever listened to her speeches you can tell that she’s basically dumb. My prediction is that she’s going to keep winding the noose tighter and tighter until something gives. I said over a week ago that Hoyer was working behind the scenes. What do you thing now? She’s entering the fight for her survival which could go either way.

I'm wondering just how old the old multi-face-lifted prune is anyway....anyone know?

Guess they have to do like foresters do with trees; take a core sample and count the rings.

Nancy is learning the lesson that it’s easier to tell the truth than to lie. Lies have many versions, the truth only one basic factual story. It’s much easier to just tell the truth, than have to explain lies that she is spinning.

I was shocked (yes shocked I say!) to even hear mention of her possibly (yes possibly!) having to step down as speaker over her lies on this.

Won’t happen, but it’s nice to hear it said on national TV. Was being discussed on Fox around noon central today. Probably not brought up as a possibility on the other news channels. Everything’s fine over there! Move along, nothing to see...nothing wrong...if anything’s wrong it’s still Bush’s fault anyway!

Well someone on our side is apparently holding Pelosi’s feet to the fire over this.

Its about time.

I guess some of the gonadless Republicans are finally budding out some new balls.

For now we’ll call them Spring ball-lets, and see if they mature into some palpable gravitas.

[. . .the administration was misleading the Congress on weapons of mass destruction.]

The list of those who believed Saddam had WMD included MI6, Mossad, the GRU, the BND, the Iranians, Saddam's military commanders, Bill Clinton's national security council, and most of the rest of the world.

“Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real...”
