WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is expanding a program initiated by President George W. Bush aimed at checking the immigration status of virtually every person booked into local jails.
In four years, the measure could result in a tenfold increase in deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes, according to current and former U.S. officials.

The way it’s SUPPOSED to work is that the guys from ICE look through the records of alien (i.e., non-citizen) inmates.
Conviction for certain crimes constitutes a basis for removal (deportation) from the US. If one of the aliens in custody has been convicted of such a crime (and there is a wide range), then the usual procedure is for ICE to put a “detainer” on the inmate, and the moment he finishes his sentence, ICE picks him up and puts him in immigration custody.
The alien may be able to post a bond and be released and then go before an Immigration Judge in the nearest big city, OR - depending on the conviction in question, and it could be for his most recent offense or one that occurred at any time - he is not allowed to post bond, and he stays in ICE custody while his removal case is pending before an Immigration Judge who holds court at that same facility. (Lancaster, CA, in the Antelope Valley is the closest one to where I’m sitting now).
Again, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

actually it makes me wanna go ... yawn. this is something that should have been done long ago and is probably not being done thoroughly enough to make a difference. besides, until the border is secure the ones that have been thrown out will just come back.

I think it will be good to get a handle on what percentage of jailed criminals are here illegally. Numbers now, at best, are guesses.
How about checking every Home Depot's parking lot.
Also perhaps every drunk pissing in a Quickie Mart parking lot at 10am in the morning.
The ACLU and others have tried to block 287 [g] citing profiling and discrimination. It works in terms of stemming crimes and forcing the illegals to move. The success has been well-documented in Prince William County, Virginia.
BTW: This procedure only effects illegals with previously recorded fingerprints.

Yeah, Bush wasn’t so up front when it came to illegals either. That was the last straw for me with Bush.
