If you're really in into guns and you want reliable protection, stay with a revolver, Smith and Wesson.
Take a look at a four inch barrel model 10-5, a three inch model 36, or a two inch 5-shot model 37 air-weight, all in .38 special. It's reliable and the cops used them for years.
I bought this Smith & Wesson Model 686 Revolver as one of my first home defense handguns and although I have since tried many others including autoloaders, I still keep this one on my belt when I can. It's just my favorite. If you go stainless it is very low maintenance if you are like me and dont always take real good care of things but still want them to work.
JMHO
Can you help this fellow like you helped me?
You noticed that.
At a time, there were about six or so Freepers who would give the best advice on firearms anyone could get. I don’t know what happened to them but they have been replaced by people with too much time on their hands.
The best advice is to seek your own. Get a chance to actually shoot the guns you’re interested in. Talk to the people who compete with those guns.
I’m not a fan of Glocks for the first time shooter or for that matter revolvers. No safety on the Glocks and trying to use double action in the middle of stress can lead to poor results but it’s up to the buyer after careful consideration.
Amen Bro!
My wife picked up a .38 revolver and was hitting black on the target with it in no time flat. She was almost proficient with it in one short outing.
Revolvers are simple to use and learn.
Practice, practice, practice.
“I wouldn’t buy a handgun in .380 caliber. You can’t find ammunition for it.”
Very true. I’ve had a backorder on .380 for over half a year.
.
Buy one that you can still get ammo for and can afford the ammo.
Wow the price of that Taurus went up as I clicked on the link to buy. MSRP went from $519 to $546 just like that.
I agree...
the simple sound of racking a 12 guage is enough to soil the pants of most would-be intruders
Everybody has an opinion... I got my wife a Beretta .32 tomcat, and myself a Tauraus 9mm millenium compact semi. Very happy with both. Good safeties, capacity, reliable, concealable, and value. Pratice, practice, practice.

Great advice.
Go with a semi-auto, Springfield Armory's got a nice selection that all come with a complete kit.
I’m not sure about that. When I applied for my CCW I only had to present my DD214; the Sheriff’s Office took my fingerprints and sent them electronically to Tallahassee. I got my CCW in the mail about six weeks later.
I sure want one! One of these days...
No shooting? No Fair!
In Texas it's:
A total of 50 rounds are fired during the course of the qualification test. A score of 70%, or 175 points of a possible 250, is required to pass. The target used is a TX-PT (we use the B2 targets but they're the same size) which is a human-shaped silhouette target measuring 45 by 24 inches. All shooting is from the ready position, which means the gun is already in your hands and aimed in. No holster shooting or shooting from concealed is required.
Course of Fire:
3 yard line - 20 shots:
1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots in 10 seconds, once
7 yard line - 20 shots:
5 shots in 10 seconds, once
1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 4 seconds, once
3 shots in 6 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once
15 yard line - 10 shots:
2 shots in 6 seconds, once
3 shots in 9 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once
I have several 1911s and high capacity pistols, but my two main home defense handguns are a 4 inch 357 magnum model 19 smith and wesson and a 2 inch J frame chief’s special 38 caliber snubby revolver.
that and a shotgun...its just a bargain rack 12 ga savage pump action shotgun which came with the barrel cut down to 18 inches. I am very competent with it.
I keep the revolvers handy because Ive had prowlers late at night and learned that when you hear a bump in the night, a revolver with six sure shots is a great confidence builder.
If you want to buy gum I recommend getting bubble gum. Bazooka brand is the best to conceal carry.

They're all reliable, natural pointers, and the cops used them for years.
