My husband and I are planning on buying a gun and also applying for a concealed weapons permit in the state of Florida but I have to admit that we are not very educated on what is what in the gun world so I was hoping for some help on what we should buy as our first gun. A revolver or semi-automatic? Is one safer than the other? This gun purchase will be primarily for home protection although I would also like to be able to easily carry it.
Also, we do have a baby in the house so I want to be sure to keep him safe from the gun once he is mobile. Is a gun safe the best idea?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Why limit yourself to one?
I live in Florida as well. My advice would be to go to the nearest gun shop and talk with the staff. They’ll be able to advise you on what fits your particular needs. They’ll also be able to start you on the road to acquiring your CCW permits. Good luck.
Is one safer than the other? ....................... The 380 Bersa Auto is very safe, it has 3 safeties and one is key controlled. Its affordable and a decent item for the price. There are many military surplus foreign guns on the market that are good, but the safeties aren’t as good on military pistols.
True. May one for carrying and another just for home protection?
There are too many answers to this one, but if I had to give one answer I would say buy a Sig Sauer P229, probably in 9mm. Yes, a semiauto requires more in the way of training than does a revolver, but that won't be a problem if you train.
I own a P228, which is essentially the same thing, so I'm intimately familiar with the weapon, and I say it's second to none.
If you have to ask that question the answer is usually a revolver.
Well, that’s kind of like asking what car is best, or what kind of food would be best for dinner. There is no single right answer.
Best thing to do is start looking for local friends with experience to talk to. Join a local gun club. Take a class (NRA basic pistol or similar), and try out different guns to see what works for you.
A .22 pistol is always a good start. Not a defensive gun, but it’s a great way to start shooting inexpensively. Great fun, and you’ll learn how semi-autos work if that’s the way you want to go.
I’m a new shooter too; my wife and I just got our LTCs this winter. We have two .22s (a Ruger MkIII and a Smith & Wesson 22A-1), and I recently picked up a Beretta 92fs 9mm, which I absolutely love.
Good luck!
After you are done with shopping for yourself, get the kid a Crickett!

Teach ‘em young to keep them safe.
The safest, most reliable and easiest handgun for a novice to operate is a revolver. If you buy one in caliber .38 Special, the recoil is easy to manage and the ammunition is widely available.
The one that works,
The one you’ll use,
The one you’re comfortably able to use well,
The one you can afford,
The one that does the most possible jobs,
The one you can get ammo for.
You have 2 hands buy 2 guns..
A 38 revolver or a 9mm glock for CCW.
A Glock 357sig for home protection with a pump action shotgun as backup..
The one that works,
The one youll use,
The one youre comfortably able to use well,
The one you can afford,
The one that does the most possible jobs,
The one you can get ammo for.
Bears repeating.
A gun is a very personal decision. Don’t listen to people who say buy X or Y brand.....I recommend Kimber;-)
It is too personal a decision and the gun needs to be comfortable to you.
Absolutely!
12 Guage with 000 buck and rifled slugs for home defense.
A large bore hand gun for close range.
A 30.06 for hunting Deer and other large game.
I had a few "fun guns", an UZI 9mm and a CAR15 but the basics are basics for a reason.
WalMart has these on sale for $299.
Hope you didn't pay much more than that.
Is Florida like TX? Here, if you use a revolver for you CHL test, you can only carry a revolver, but if you use a semi-auto, you can carry either one after you get your concealed handgun license.
I like my S&W 642 with Crimson Trace Grips. I also like my Walther PPS. But alas, no Crimson Trace is available for it.
I agree with your recommendation for a revolver. I would suggest a .357 that will also fire the lower power 38 special. The function of a revolver is fairly intuitive.
You could store a loaded handgun for easy accessibility with a laptop sized gun safe - www.gunvault.com.
Two of each, if you have two hands.
